Not even a med-student yet, but I found it interesting how competitive a lot of people said this match was, but in the match thread it seemed like most people ended up with their first choice.
I believe the NRMP releases official stats on this every year.
I agree that the folks who got their #1 are more likely to want to shout it from the rooftops. It is kind of embarrassing to admit you didn't do well in the match. When I saw your post, I couldn't help but read it as if it were implying to me, "See, everyone else got their #1. It wasn't that hard to match this year. You just REALLY sucked"
But seriously, the process can be very random. Going by the statistics for people with my credentials, I should have matched. I received positive feedback at a number of my interviews so I don't think I gave off any weird vibes to my interviewers (though you never know what conclusions the occasional interviewers who like to use interviews as psychoanalysis sessions might end up drawing). It's just that some of us end up being outliers I guess.
