Hi I'm a student at columbia university and I was wondering what medical schools I have a shot at.

My stats:

CGPA:3.5
SGPA:3.4
mcat (11,10,9)

my science classes:

Intensive organic chemistry b+,A-

Biology b-,b

Physics b+, A-

Chem lab b+

Orgo lab b

Virology A

Biochemistry b

Microbiology A

Genetics A-

And all B through A in other courses.

Research:
I spent a summer at Columbia's SURF program doing research.

Volunteer work:
I spent a summer volunteering at columbia Presbyterian in the ER room

Shadowing/clinical:
I spent a summer shadowing like 10 doctors in various fields.

Extracurriculars:
i have some extracurriculars with a leadership role in two of them.

I kind of want to stay in New York State... Where should I apply?

Thx!

Go buy the MSAR and then look at which schools have an average mcat and GPA to yours.

well according to msar the only medical school that match my average stats are DO schools...
Are medical schools (SUNYs and nycm and albany for example) going to cut me any slack for my lower GPA since its from Columbia? I mean because there average GPA is a 3.6/3.5 so im one point lower but i did go to columbia..
what do you think?

They might but don't expect them too.

So then what should i do? my GPA is only average for DO schools.. so i should just apply to DO schools or should i also apply elsewhere? These are the schools i would like to go to.. but they all have average GPAs above mine.

Moving to WAMC forum.

Take at least Columbia and Cornell off your list. It's fine to apply to reaches, but your reaches should be reasonable.

Also, 1 summer of volunteering, 1 summer of research, and 1 summer of shadowing do not make a strong EC list. Is there a reason you didn't continue any of these through the school year?

Definitely apply to DO schools and broaden your search beyond NY.

You should also apply to schools that are outside of New York. Consider Quinnipiac, Jefferson, Drexel, Temple, Commonwealth (PA), Penn State, GW, Oakland Beaumont, Western Michigan, Loyola, Rosalind Franklin, St. Louis. You should be fine for DO but apply to more than the 2 in NY.
