  1. Pre-Dental
Hello, long time lurker first time poster. I'm applying this coming cycle, definitely to all 3 texas schools, im tx resident.
oGPA: 3.71
sGPA: 3.89
21 AA 22 TS 25 PAT
150 hours volunteering at hospital
30 domestic shadowing hours
30 foreign shadowing hours
1 year undergrad research, no pubs
3 ok letters of rec, will try and get a dentist letter of rec because Baylor requires one
1.5 years working as science tutor for school
50 hours high school tutor volunteer
OK personal statement, still working on it

I'll apply to 3 texas dental schools, hopefully I can get an interview and do good in interview.
But just in case, what out of state schools should I consider? I don't have much money for like 20 schools, but I do want to have a broader spread, say 6 or 7 out of state candidates. Any ideas? Also, what are my chances for texas schools? I am tx resident

Thanks sdn

Just curious, from where did you get your foreign shadowing hours?

You will be practicing in US, not Mexico. More shadowing hours!

This is true, but I feel like I can talk compare both experiences in the interview and it would be something slightly uncommon, but you're right, 30 hours might not cut it. I will shoot for 50 🙁
(i did talk to an adcom of a texas school and they said I should definitley include the foreign hours in my app)

I would be careful adding the foreign hours. A lot of programs can hover over the border of being ethical by allowing just about anyone to perform dental procedures on people who live in poverty in other countries. I shadowed (strictly shadowed) dental students in Nicaragua and did not include it in my app because I didn't want ad coms to question what I did while I was there. There was even a post where someone went abroad and mentioned they helped extract teeth and his interviewers really tore into him over it. I would go ahead and grab at minimum 100 hours shadowing in the US. You can talk about your time abroad in an interview where you can specifically mention that it was only shadowing, but I'm really weary of putting on the actual application.

I'd only apply to the 3 Texas schools if I was you.

Just apply in Texas. That would save money and time. (From one Texas resident to another)
