I'm certain I want to go to med school, but I'm not sure which school is right for me.

I would love to stay here in the Triangle Area and go to UNC. It's in-state which is cheaper and easier to get into. I love the area. I love Chapel Hill. My boyfriend is applying to the School of Engineering at NC State and I would love to be able to be near him and not have to make him change his mind on where to go.

But I know it's not the best idea to throw all my eggs into one basket and I want to find a school that's right for me.

Here are some important things for me:

-I want to go somewhere that has a diverse student body, but also where the student body is relatively small, at least roughly a medium sized class.

-I'm very interested in the surgical side and also in Thoracic surgery.

-I want to go somewhere that has opportunities to do international outreach type programs and offers opportunities to go abroad and aid in medical relief work.

-I want to go somewhere where my social-justice background plays a part in the 4-year curriculum.

-I would preferably like to go somewhere that's not in a big city, but it's not a deal breaker.

-I would prefer to stay on the east coast.

Anyone know of any good fits for me?

You should apply broadly and see where you get in, then look at your list of preferences and see which fit best.

Med school isn't like applying to college where you pick a couple to apply to. Most applicants apply to 10-30 school, a lot of below average applicants apply to many more than that.

Get an MSAR and see which schools:
1) Are similar to or below your stats for MCAT and GPA
2) Accept out of state students frequently (if its a state you are not a resident of)

Pick a bunch to apply to based on location and the criteria above, see where you get in...then worry about the best fit.

A lot of people only get into one school, so its not much of an issue. And where you go to medical school doesn't really matter much, yes you're better off somewhere you're happy but we don't always get to be picky. You can be picky when you apply to residency.

Maybe check out Ohio St (I know that's not really east coast, but it's close), UVA, and Georgetown.
