First-time applicant, non-traditional, have been a licensed tech for 1.5 years. I have a previous B.A. in Philosophy and am currently finishing up my prerequisites. Overall GPA is 3.79. Science GPA is about 3.85. Last 45 GPA about 3.9. Approximately 10,000 hours as assistant then tech in shelter medicine and emergency. A handful of animal related certifications like RECOVER CPR and Fear Free. A handful of various volunteer opportunities and presentation giving, but pretty much all animal-related. Various employment over the years that's not animal related. Interested in going into shelter medicine.

Here's my current list of what I qualify to apply to. Trying to decide how to narrow it down. They'll all be OOS for me. Most interested in good mentorship and hands-on learning.

University of Arizona
Midwestern
UC Davis
Colorado
Florida
Iowa
Kansas
Louisiana
Minnesota
Mississippi
North Carolina
Ohio
Oregon
University of Tennessee
LMU
Virginia-Maryland
Washington
Wisconsin

Hi fellow non-trad! I’ll be starting this fall at UMN. During the application process, I generally felt appreciated as a non-traditional student (BA Classics over here 🙂 ).

Of your list, I applied to Minnesota, Ohio, Oregon, CSU, VMCVM, WSU, and Wisconsin. I liked each of these schools a lot for different reasons, and I think my background was a strength for me (saying this to say, I think it would be a strength for you, too!). I’d remove Davis from your list, as well as Wisconsin (unless you’ve got plenty to spend - UW may be worth a try). This is because OOS acceptances are typically 3.9+

With your GPAs and unique experiences, I think you have a really solid shot. Work on creating strong, poignant essays and securing excellent LORs. Don’t be afraid to have people from your past write for you! I had one of my Classics profs write me one.🙂

Best of luck!

On the flip side historically UW’s waitlist MOVES, I remember there was a V’24 on here that was like 150/200 and got off it. I don't think its as much of a reach as Davis

Was definitely thinking I should probably take Davis off the list. I don't really want to waste money, but I would really like to get in this cycle because I'm 34 and I'd just like to get started. Little concerned about Arizona as they seem to have a few difficulties with their program, but they also seem to be actively working on it.

Really like Mississippi, Kansas, and Ohio. Like Florida but don't think I'll get in honestly. And I've already submitted my app for LMU for possible spring start date!
