So the initial high of finally being accepted into a school has started to subside and the fear of being a poor OOS student has started to sink in. When should I start panicking? Am I off to an early start 🙂 ?

My current hope is to get my FAFSA in ASAP and hopefully qualify for the National Service Corp. scholarship when that becomes available (april?). But beyond that I think I need a little guidance about WHEN to take out copious amounts of loans. Any advice from those either in my shoes, or grown out of them, would be appreciated!

I can guarantee you one thing! If you're the kind of person who panics about every single thing in life, you won't survive the next 4 years of your life as a dental student! Relax! You're not the only OOS student. Many people have done it before you, so there's really no reason to panic! You'll come out of dental school with a huge debt and that's a fact! So worry about that when you're done with school and you need to pay off your loans. Even then, there's really no reason to panic! This is perhaps one of the best loans you'll take out in your life, because there are so many different payment options that will match your income, so that everyone can eventually pay their loans off.

Thanks for the calming words. I guess the only reason I'm worried is that I don't understand the time frame at all. Yeah sure, there are tons of great loans out there and I really don't care if I'm swimming in debt like every other dental student, but when does this need to start happening?

It seems like deadlines related to dental school are basically to be ignored: early is on time, on time is late and late is unacceptable. My dilemma is deciding what is early.
