I have been accepted to both Touro-NV and COMP, and am having a hard time choosing. I picked both of these school based on being close to family, but now that I got both acceptances I am having a hard time choosing. Can anyone help me out? What would you do?

I had the same exact dilemma last year - and it was one of the hardest decisions I have had to make. PM me your reasons of why you liked one of the other, etc. and I will tell you if your considerations are worth it. Overall though, I think we have a lot of strengths that Touro-NV doesn't have and vice versa - I wish we had some of the things they have up at Touro. I don't think you'll go wrong at either place - but PM me any questions and your concerns - I know it's a really difficult decision!

and ditto for PMing me about your questions/concerns about Touro... 😀

COMP is well known by residency programs in the SoCal area.....with Touro-NV being so new, I think it best to go to a program more grounded that has been around longer.

but being the only school in southern nevada, and with sites already set up for us, and our association with Touro MI, getting a residency won't be a problem. 2 las vegas hospitals are starting derm, ophtho and EM residencies by 2007, and there are rumors or an ortho surg residency starting up here. due to the Dr. shortage in nevada, we are being welcomed with open arms. the only other med school in nevada is UN-reno, which has a class size of 50. and, if EM is your thing, UMC is a level 1 trauma center.

In addition, for 2008, they are looking at creating fellowships in Cardiology, GI, and pulm/crit care. All of these will be DO fellowships.

This is one of the most attractive things about Touro in Nevada that they are constantly working hard to become the best. It seems that older institutions are sitting comfortably and not working that hard to advance, at least not compared to Touro. It's nice that they're working so hard to improve, and the improvements will be what is in demand today. I ended up choosing COMP though after weighing all the factors, but I think both schools are excellent choices.

Another VERY important thing to factor in is the new curriculum at COMP - although it has bumps along the way (which is another thing to consider), we have A LOT of time to study for boards. From my understanding, Touro (and many other schools) have 3 weeks. Our new curriculum not only gives us less classtime during the first 2 years, but we now have about 2 months to study for boards. 👍

I was in the same situation as you last year. I would carefully evaluate both schools, ask questions of persons in both schools and decide what is best for you. Ask yourself how you felt about each interview and the overall atmosphere at the 2 schools.

FYI: There is some good info on Touro from these threads:

Happy choosing! 🙂
