just recently matched at UMD anesthesia. looking for apts now. need to know what areas are good/where do most of UMD residents reside/what is the area surrounding UMD med center like? any input would be appreciated

Here is my reply to that question in another forum (general residency)

Always a good place to start is rent.com. I would try and start around the zipcode 21201 (which is the hospitals zipcode).

Here are some places that are really close to the campus (within walking distance) since it can be hard to figure it out looking at a map.

The Sail Cloth Factory

The Redwood - this would be one I would seriously consider if you can afford it (real nice)

The Malboro/Redwood Square - I lived in Redwood Square during first year. I really disliked the management and had a lot of problems while living there (a dumptruck that would come at 3am on several mornings ... and was so loud it woke me up, the lady downstairs that must have had a marching band playing all the time, another lady that almost assaulted me in the hallway and finally it just didn't seem secure - some of the homeless people from the streets would roam the halls)

The Atrium - a little further but the rent is a little cheaper. This is close to Lexington Market so it could be considered not safe but, I lived there during second year and really liked it although the management here wasn't all that great either ... lots of changing of employees.

The Greenhouse

I also lived at Spinnaker Bay which is like a mile from campus. VERY, VERY nice apartment complex but extremely expensive. My husband and I wanted to live somewhere nice in the city before we left and decided we could splurge for a year (not a great idea b/c it came back to bite us in the butt) but, it was definitely worth it.

Also, UMB (which is all the professional schools) puts together a very helpful website that gives links to all the places around the campus. Be careful though b/c some of these places are rather far away (won't have an asterick).

This might actually be a better place to start. This will also allow you to view ads for roomates (in some of the townhouses or apartments around the area).

I would also add the Standard apts. The rent is reasonable since it includes all utilities, and they give discounts for UMMS. The apartments are very nice too. I'm going to renew my lease, so that tells you something. Plus, I could walk to my hospital (150 yards to Mercy) so I saved a lot of time and money.

Wow, Spinnaker Bay? That is definitely pretty luxurious. I can see how a rent like that could end up screwing you.

Definitely check that UMD housing site. We live in a house nearby, and its a pretty good value, especially with roommates.

might want to check out canton or federal hill as well...im in fed hill and it takes me 10 mins from door-> garage when i leave at 615ish...anesthesia hrs = no rush hour.....these neighborhoods are a fun time as well especially if you are young.....🙂

I was very happy with the Henderson House in Mount Vernon. I lived there for four years of residency and moved out last July.

It was clean and the management was very responsive. The neighborhood was definitely the most interesting in Baltimore--I walked to many restaurants, stores, and places to study. The symphony was great and 5 minutes away by foot. It was also a 5 minute walk--or one minute run--to Penn Station, so trains and taxis were very convenient. The other tenants were of the resident/student demographic, as the building is close to the Peabody, University of Baltimore, and an art college. I had a view of the city and a garage space. It was cheap as dirt because I had a roommate most of the time. I think the rent has climbed somewhat since I left. It is probably 10 minutes by car to the UMD during anesthesiologist hours. Speaking of cars, take yours to Federal Motors in Federal Hill for an honest fix.

Good luck in Baltimore. It's really a great town--at least the world in which you will live. The other world will present to your emergency room with blood loss.

Also, if you aren't married to the city, Towson/Timonium/Lutherville and a lot of the surrounding areas can be MUCH cheaper rent wise. On the order of 50% in some places.

Remember to buy a bullet proof when your moving to baltimore. 😀

Be careful though - Baltimore traffic SUCKS (even at 6 AM). If you are doing anesthesia at MD you will probably be getting out between 5 - 7 still considered rush hour. I live in Parkville now which is closer to 95 then Towson and I-695 STINKS, especially from 6 - 9 am and then again from 4 - 7 pm. Best advice, if you are looking for an apartment outside the city make sure you do the drive on a weekday to the hospital (and from if you can). I don't mind driving too much but, sitting in stop and go traffic drives me NUTS.

Spinnaker Bay was nice - we got to live with some local 'celebrities' (Jamal Lewis ... no longer a local celebrity, Mario the singer/rapper, and some TV personalities). That definitely came with a price and most of the people living in the building were so snobby and full of themselves that it made sitting by the pool quite amusing (just listening to some of the conversations made me want to throw up).

B-more has actually gotten a little better safety wise. Of course if you have no common sense you could get into some trouble but, as long as you stay around the hospital, Fells Point, Canton, Federal Hill areas you will be fine. Plus, LOTS of money is being dumped into the city and new apartment complexes are going up all over the place.

1. Canton
2. Fed Hill
3. Fells

I didn't realize how close Mercy is to The Standard...if you are there, it is a no brainer, that place is gorgeous. (non-gas person here...just a baltimoron who has lived all over b'more and the 'burbs)
