ERAS is right around the corner, and the anxiety of the match is begining to engulf me- Versed TIVA would be very helpful for the next couple of months. Soooo many programs to choose from and not really sure which one's to apply to. I could use a little help from you seniors out there who've already been through the process. Anyone out there who has had good experiences either interviewing or currently at a program- please add some coments to this thread.

I'll start off by saying that I'm a US-FMG from the Caribbean, therefore I'm already behind the ball. Be that as it may, I've honored all my 3rd year rotations (except psych-gerrrrr...) which were done in Ireland. I have also honored all my 4th year rotations which have been done here in the states (ICU x 2, GAS x 2, Neuro, Radio, FP) Step 1 = 221 (90) Step 2 = just took and have a good feeling (much better feeling than step 1). CSA is done as well as ECFMG certification. LOR = 3 GAS all excellent and 1 from a cardiothoracic surg which I also believe to be excellent.

I plan to toss a big net (> 70 programs) and hope to land a residency that will make me HAPPY during those 3/4 years. What makes me happy????

1) Non-malignant
2) Time to study (ie. in hospital 55-70 hrs. per week)
3) Don't want to be in a old run down dungeon for those 3 years, in fact I'm keen on newer facilities (I know... who doesn't want to do residency at newer facilities.... but whose got them and who doesn't... I hear Penn State Hershey and UMass are great places to go do residency)
4) Don't care about location or name so long as I get a solid education.

What tier programs should I be aiming for???? Low tier / middle tier.... Do I have a shot at Top tier assuming I get >230 on step II?????

This forum has been very useful to me in the past, so for those of you who clue me in to some programs and are kind enough to respond to this thread I thank you in advance. 👍

Congrats on choosing anesthesiology. Anyhoots you are going about applying the right way. Run up the visa bill and see what interviews you land. Then you can decide what places to go to or turn down.

It would also be useful to know areas of the county you are seriously entertaining living in or, on the flip, absolutely would not live in. Apply to whatever tiers you want, who cares, its just money right? 😱

I think you'd be hard pressed to find a program these days that gets even close to the 80 hour limit.... with the exception of your ICU months. Many don't even get close to 60 hours.

You should do just fine with your stats. I think 70 programs might be a bit much. I applied to a total of 30 anesthesia and prelim programs and spent somewhere in the area of $600. I'm pretty sure the fee for each program goes up the more programs you apply to. You also have to take into account travel costs, finding time for travel, and possibly having to buy a new suit or two.

It's definitely good to start out with a big net, though. I only accepted about half the interviews I was offered.... and certainly regretted not applying to some programs. It's always hard to tell what programs would be a good match when you start applying.

Best of luck.
