How much ownership would a hospital give a physician?

It’s not uncommon

They give shares in an ASC

Hospital usually owns 51% and that also allows for better contracts with insurance companies

It’s especially common in non-CON states

Wait...they give you shares for free? (Stark, Kickback, etc)

...and why does 51% control mean they can negotiate better contracts?

No you have to buy those shares at fair market value

What I’ve been told is that since majority ownership of the ASC is under that hospital system, the contracts they have with insurance companies are valid there

I own 1.5% of my newly built ASC by paying fmv and am HOPD employed. That was the maximum an individual physician could own initially, but I may be able to buy more in the future.

how is the hospital set up? I've been told we can't do similar investments because we're non-profit.
