Hi Everyone,

I am planning take Bio for my Pre med reqs. Which one do I need to take?

These are the following classes being offered at the community college.

Fundamentals of Biological Science - (SC) - 4 Units
Human Biology - (SC) - 3 Units
Fundamentals of Microbiology - (SC) - 4 Units
Introduction to Human Anatomy and Physiology - (SC) - 5 Units

Ask the people that work at the CC which classes they reccomend pre-meds should take. I don't believe Mciro or A&P will count as pre-reqs; they sound like they are aimed towards nursing students, as well. Definitely take Fundamentals of Biological Science. Human Biology doesn't have a lab (3 credits only), so it's most likely not going to be considered a pre-req either.

You need 1 year of General Biology with lab. Looking at the above courses, it looks like the Fundamentals of Biological Science might be the course but you need two semesters (or three quarters) to make up the one year plus two semesters of lab for that course.

This is true as there is generally a year-long course that meets the pre-med requirements. Anatomy and Physiology, Human Biology or Micro will not meet the requirements.

Can anyone tell me what Bio classes I need to meet Bio pre reqs?

If you will look at the post, njbmd did tell you what you need.

You need one year of General Biology w. Labs. This needs to be the course for science majors not an intro course.

I would take a Genetics class.

I would take a Genetics class.

...and then adcoms would tell you to go take your bio prereqs. Genetics alone isn't a prereq. Good class though.

To the OP: we can't judge your bio classes by their titles. The word "units" has no standard definition. Every school is different. You can either give us more information about what school you're looking at, or you can find somebody at that school to talk to.

I was suggesting Genetics along with the other classes already suggested.

I'm starting to study for my mcats and I can't remember how many times I thought, "I'm so glad I took a Genetics class even though it isn't a prerequisite for many medical shools."

You are at a community college so first, you need to make sure that the class is going to transfer to wherever you want to go to finish your undergrad.

Also... Human bio is more of a survey course. Intro to anatomy/physiology seems to be as well. Most community colleges have a set of bio classes that lead into one another. Look at the higher level bio classes and start taking the classes that are required for those.

I took human biology as well as anatomy and anatomy II. They were fun classes and they taught me a great deal, but I would have been better off starting with the basic biology classes that I needed to get into the upper div stuff.

Hi,

I have never gone to school in this country. I don'nt know how the semester system works. This is the college near my home. Please tell me which bio and chemistry classes to take on evenings and weakends to complete my pre reqs for medical school.

I know this is lot of information to ask but your help to choose the classes would give me some direction.

Thanks a lot

Pretty confusing course descriptions - you need to have a talk with an advisor - the pre reqs should be year long courses (1 per semester) with an accompanying lab - the first Biol listed (101) does not have a lab, but the Bio 102 does, but it does not appear to have a second semester class, so I don't think this is it...then further down the 130/131 sequence is a lecture lab, but it has a Chem pre req and that is a bit unusual for an intro class...so the answer is: I can't figure it out either - go see an advisor.

Yeah, you need to talk to a counselor, but at the very least it should be a year long intro bio course for majors that includes a lab. This will generally be two semesters worth, or three quarters.

Secondly, I'll agree with a few others respondents and heartily recommend a genetics class. I just finished the MCAT, and I have to say my genetics course was the single most useful class I took. Plus, there are a few schools such as USC and OHSU that require it.

Since it's a California community college, one thing which will help you is to look at the transfer agreement to one or more of the UCs: the Bio and Chem sequences which lead to their majors are the ones you want to take.
