hey guys...i normally always get great answers when I have questions so I don't expect this to be any different...i'm a little confused in which direction to go.

i plan to apply to allopathic schools and need to fulfill my math requirements. i have taken statistics already but i need to take a calculus course. there are a few calculus courses offered at my college and i don't know which one to take. I'm in enrolled in Math 205 - Introductory Calculus but my school also offers Math 231 - Calculus w/ Functions pt. I. When I talked to a biology professor about this in passing one day, she sort of seemed to be against me being enrolled in Math 205, but she has no background in medicine and is not in anyway affiliated with the pre-med program at my school. I don't know whether to heed or advice or stick where I'm at. I would rather not take Math 231 because one it seems harder (higher course number) and i have not always been the strongest when it comes to math. let me know what you all would do!

ask yourself the following
do i need either class for my major? if yes take the one required
if not
take the easier intro to calc
either way you could effectively get away with a simpler math class instead of calc unless its a requirement for your major.

Do you have the course description by any chance? Those would probably help give us a better idea of what each course entails.

Sounds like Math 231 would be Calc I and 205 is more just an introductory course which covers calc but not to the same level. However it's really hard to for me to say as I am not familiar with the classes or your school.

I'm only a freshman, so I can't comment on what allopathic medical schools would want in terms of the math requirement because it can vary from school to school. However I have been told on here that Calc I and stats is quite sufficient to fulfill any requirements. In my own school, as long as we have a year of math it doesn't really matter what math class we take.
So I think you'd be okay by taking 205 instead of 231. A year of math is a year of math either way...

Did you get a chance to talk to your adviser yet?

Before even reading the thread I knew the answer. Read the thread. Answer remains the same.

It's math. If it's not required, do whichever course is easier. Talk to your engineering friends and take the math class they aren't in.

i actually haven't talked to my advisor about it, but i don't really have the chance either because school is about to start and my time is up to choose before I can even meet with her to discuss the situation. it is not required for my major...my major is psychology.

here are the course descriptions

Math 205 (3 credits)

Topics from differential calculus with applications to the social, behavioral or life sciences and business or management.

Math 231 part I (4 credits)

Math 231 and 232 form a sequence that combines first-semester calculus with algebra and trigonometry.
Calculus material in Math 231 includes limits and derivatives of algebraic functions and their applications.

First one hands down.

Not only does the topic seem easier but so is the competition. You're in the class with others like yourself instead of math majors + engineers in 231.

Slam dunk. No debate.

haha okay then. I just didn't know if medical school would see "introductory" and be thrown off by that.

No way. I got AP credit for both calcs and didn't hold me back. That's as non-college as you can get, lol
