Which of the following are pretty much required to be able to perform well on the DAT?

Biology 1 - Basic principles which apply to the nature of plant and animal cells, including metabolism, reproduction, protein synthesis and genetics. (Prerequisite: Appropriate placement scores or successful completion of college prep courses.

Biology 2 (Biological Diversity) - Introduction to botany and zoology. Structure, function, and representative groups of plants and animals. Open only to students whose major requires this specific course.

General Chem 1
General Chem 2
Organic Chem 1
Organic Chem 2
Microbiology (Upper level)
Biochemistry 1
Human Anatomy
Human Physiology
Molecular Biology
Immunology

The reason I'm asking is that I'm kind of stuck in a situation, and I'm trying to consider all my options.

Thanks

Personally I would recommend completing a year of General Chem., a year of O-chem, and a year of Biology. The other courses aren't necessary (in fact I NEVER took any of those other classes except for Physiology, but I was a Business major).

Obviously the other classes wouldn't hurt, but I don't think you need them to do well on the DAT. I got 20's on each of the Sciences and a 22 AA.

I took the basic science courses and then studied the Kaplan book.

Good luck!

How much more difficult would the DAT be if I only took chem1&2, bio1&2, organic1, microbiology, and anatomy?

Could I pick up the rest of the organic that I need from the review books? Or is this just suicide?

If you could take O-chem 2 instead of Microbiology or Anatomy I definitely would. Otherwise you might be able to pick it up just from studying the Kaplan book, but my recommendation would be to take the class. I guess you could glance at it in the Kaplan book and see if it makes sense.

Good luck!

The truth is that you could probably get a 17+ on the DAT by just studying everything in the KAPLAN book and doing some review materials. It would be very hard, but definatly doable. I know a guy who got a 20 and never took orgo or the second semester of biology. but highly unrecomended.

With one semester of Orgo you will be fine because the second semester isn't really tested much on the DAT. I beleive the DAT goes up to and including spectroscopy.

Take 1 year of gen checm along with 1 year of bio and do orgo I in summer I and you will be ready to take the DAT by the end of aug beginning of september. Everything will be fresh and u'll do well. Dont' overload on stuff u don't need.

Good luck

Thanks...I'm ready to buy some books for this mission.

I've been steered towards the Kaplan DAT book, Barron's (for the PAT), and EK 1001 O-Chem and G-Chem books for lots of practice problems. Anything else I should be looking at, considering I might try the DAT with only O-chem 1?

I usually do very well on tests...but I heard the DAT is a different animal, so I want to approach it with respect.

Thanks again.

I dissagree with what you said above. The DAT is a very standard exam format. All multiple choice which means spitting back info. The only think making the exam more difficult then lets say your bio 101 exam is that it tests 3 science, math, reading, and pat all on one exam. so in that sense there is a lot of information, but in the end you are just spitting back info to direct questions. I recomed that the Kaplan book is your primary source for info. don't go to your bio and chem books from school. ... they hae too much information which is not needed. Get the Top Score CD.... it's very good and if you can, get hold of Kaplan test prep materials found in their centers. With those things you should be set. Good luck
