Which dentist's LOR will get you in

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Which LOR would you prefer to use and why???

one from your general dentist whom you shadowed for 50+ hours or one from your orthodontist whom you've grown to know in the two years as his patient.

Another thing to consider is the dentist whom I shadowed wants me to write my own recommendation! This would be a good thing if I was a good writer and knew exactly what the admission committee is looking for in a LOR. On the other hand, my orthodontist is well known in the school I'm trying to get in and volunteered to write me a LOR; the problem with the latter is I'm not sure whats the best way to ask for the LOR? or even if its a good idea to ask.

any suggestions???😕

To be honest, I would get both letters. They both sound like they'd be very good. Most schools will let you send more letters than they require, so the more the better. If I had to pick one, I'd probably the gen dent you shadowed. Letting you write your own is pretty nice, and I'm sure he'll check it over even if you aren't the best writer. The school will think it's from him, so he'll want it to sound professsional. Good luck.

Why isn't it a good idea to ask the orthodontist?

Maybe shadow the orthodontist a little bit too, so you can have a different experience with him and get to ask more and show more interest in dentistry and then ask for the letter.

As for writing your own letter, it would be nice to have that opportunity but I wouldn't feel right about it.

Thanks danny and apollo for the suggestions above! Greatly Appreciate your opinions.

I agree with you. My greatest hesitation along with being a poor writer is that I just don't feel right about writing my own LOR. In a way I feel like its lying.

As for shadowing the orthodontist, I honestly don't have the time since the deadline is just around the corner for entering class of 2008... still ask the orthodontist?

I got my LOR from my family orthodontist (who happens to be my dads very good friend). He sent me a copy of the letter and it was seriously the most beautiful letter I have ever read. Now I know thats not always typical...

Get both, send one or the other, personally I think if they're both good it doesn't matter which you use
