So if you want to do OMS, is it better to do a GPR or a OMS 1 year internship?
I heard that GPR looks better than 1 year internship.

It depends on what you want to do after your GPR or oms intern year. 2 interns from my program matched into OMS residencies this year.

An OMS internship is way more relevant than a GPR, even though there are guys in my program who have done either one.

This is a no-brainer, do the OMS 1 year-internship, you'll 10 times as much!

It depends on how competitive you are and how much OMS the GPR will let you do. If you can do a month or two of OMS, you will get a lot of experience. You will get all of the OMS experience you will ever need in a residency. If you do a GPR you will get more experience in multidisciplinary stuff, which is tough to get in OMS. Plus, you will get a lot of good general experience and IV certification (depending on where you do your GPR) in case you don't get in or decide you don't want to do it.

I worked for an OS after undergrad. We had to bail out this dentist who did a 1 yr OS constantly. And the poor patients were suffering throuhg her lack of aptitude. From that experience, I would not do a 1 yr OS.

I think the question was about using a 1-year internship as a stepping stone into an oral surgery residency.

i always thought that once you do an internship/fellowship in a certain school, be it OS, endo, ortho or pros you pretty much get accepted the following year in the same school  so that way, if you are so focussed on an OMFS residency, an internship is way better than a GPR

Sometimes, but definately not always. If you do well then you have a good chance of staying there. If you suck then it's your kiss of death. It's like a year-long interview.
