Which would you choose? This is for a basic science a research assistant position:
1) medium prestige institution, $35K salary, one year, 35 minute drive, no publication
2) high prestige institution, no salary, 9 months, 65 minute drive, co-authorship guaranteed

Unless you're taking out loans, I don't see how you can survive on #2. Go with one.

Hell-OOO!!! $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$!!!😱

this is a no-brainer...

I would probably choose #2, I would only pick #1 if I needed the money, both of them sound like great choices. 🙂

There's no guarantee a co-authorship of a publication will help you a damn bit, while there's a very strong guarantee that 35K a year will help you financially. Go with #1!

Thanks, everyone. I'm going with #1. I don't think I can handle 2+ hours on the road. Plus, 35K will cover those darn secondaries any maybe some nice hotels during interview season. 😀

I wasn't even looking at the commute.

Also, think of the commute as just another waste of money...you'd be spending 2x the money at the unpaid job in ADDITION to not getting paid.

30k for a publication sounds steep.

#1 can lead to other research that will lead to publication.

#2 is nice but i don't think that's worth all of the negatives.

plus the gas money will kill you

hehe thanks guys. i've already chosen #1. the other one would have cost me gas $ in the 1000's. let this thread die...:beat:

An advisor of mine once said, in regards to jobs while re-applying, "med schools understand that you need to make a living."

Leave the gun, take the salary.
