In terms of being competitive for a Dermatology residency, which research profile do you think would be the most beneficial?


1. A case report published in a premier journal (JAAD) as first author

2. A more substantial category of article (longitudinal study, review, etc) in a non-premier tier journal (cutis) as first author

3. 2 Dermatology pubs as 2nd author in various journals

4. 3 pubs in the of any type, any journal, 1st or 2nd author, with perhaps only tangential relation to dermatology

FYI, JID has a much higher impact factor than JAAD and it is typically more difficult to have a paper accepted by the former than the latter (although they have different aims). It's one of the Nature subsidiaries and isn't a second-tier derm journal by any stretch of the imagination.

Basic science research with publications (especially in something prestigious like the JID) is the best.
