Hi everyone,

I'm almost done with my application but I would greatly appreciate your input on which schools are less or more receptive to out-of-state residents if I'm from California? Thanks to all those who have already given me advice for my app. Seeing as how people get flamed for posting stats that are too low or too high, I'll leave mine out. I know which schools are my reach and which ones I have a reasonable chance at based on stats. I just need help cuting this list down because of costs and time. Here's my list of schools so far.

Albany Medical College
Boston University School of Medicine
David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA
Drexel University College of Medicine
Emory University School of Medicine
George Washington University Sch of Med & Hlth Science
Georgetown University School of Medicine
Jefferson Medical Coll. of Thomas Jefferson Univ.
Keck Sch. of Med.University of Southern California
Mount Sinai School of Medicine
New York University
Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine
Oregon Health and Science University
Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine
Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science
Stanford University School of Medicine
State University of New York Downstate Medical Cen
Temple University School of Medicine
University of California San Diego
University of California San Francisco
University of California, Davis School of Medicine
University of California, Irvine- College/Medicine
University of Chicago - Pritzker
University of Maryland School of Medicine
University of Michigan Medical School
University of Minnesota Medical School-Minneapolis
University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine
University of Rochester School of Medicine and Den
University of Virginia School of Medicine
University of Washington School of Medicine
Washington University School of Medicine

Thanks again.

UW takes a lot of OOS applicants, but most of those live in the WWAMI states. Everyone else is kinda screwed 🙁

I would forget about UW. They are NOT OOS friendly at all. They give in state status to a few states without schools but other than that it's hard to even get a secondary

I'd add tulane. Good school, relatively easier to get into.

Since you did not quote your MCAT and GPA or EC, I assume you have at least 3.2 MCAT, 3.7 GPA and decent EC, the realistic choices for CA OOS are:
Albany Medical College
Drexel University College of Medicine
Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science
Temple University School of Medicine

You may want to add Einstein, St Louis and Miami

For in state:
USC
University of California, Davis School of Medicine
University of California, Irvine- College/Medicine

Of course, if you have 40 MCAT and 3.8 GPA, then the whole list is good except for UW.

Damn, you have to be that competitive in terms of stats to apply to these schools? Crap.

Add Dartmouth to the list. There's like 8 Californians in the first year class of 80. Brown accepts OOS people too.

You can add the Ohio schools too. Even though many are public, they accept lots of OOS people.

Don't apply to Brown. They only accept ~60 students via the standard path to admission. Most of their students are from their Bachelor's program or other programs they have. Unless you have high stats, don't apply to Brown...and if you have high stats I'm assuming you would rather go to a UC.

I would add MCW...they take a lot of CA applicants.

Saint Louis University might be another good one.

Took me forever to figure out the abbreviations for schools some people were suggesting.

Thanks everyone for your advice. Feel free to add more input.

Why did you change your avatar? Are those your dogs?

I felt like a snot with the Michigan avatar. Those aren't my dogs, but I thought it was a funny picture so I made it into an avatar.

Is there any statistics on this? e.g 80% must be residents and remaining can be OOS?

Is UW highly regarded? Is it tough to get in for WA residents?

I don't know about statistics, but I believe they flat out say that they only accept OOS applicants from non-WWAMI states if they are URM or applying MD/PhD.

UW is a "highly regarded" school and is still very competitive even for WA residents.

**sigh** tacrum said it right. in state is considered washington, wyoming, alaska, montana, and idaho. you would be hard pressed to find anyone with legal residency out side of those states in the MD program. it is super competitive for WA residents 🙁 i didn't get in this past cycle. it is very highly regarded from what i have read. it is often a top 10 school in both primary care and research (i read that somewhere, and i know, not everything you read is true). plus, it is in a great city. if not considered in-state, i wouldn't even bother applying (if just doing MD).

I'd take out University of Wash and University of Virginia. UW automatically reject CA residents if you're not an MSTP candidate. UV just takes very few CA people. Check out my mdapp, I did a lot of research on OSS acceptance rates to get my long list of schools.

👍 Instigata is right. I heard similar advice from my premed adviser who knows someone on the Brown committee. Unless you have some sort of connection to RI or Brown or are stellar applicant, don't waste a secondary app fee on Brown. If you have your heart set and it is your dream school then apply, if not invest your money in an application at another med school.

Rosalind Franklin has mad people from CA. This past year was actually the first time there were more kids from IL than CA.
