I am starting med school in august and really want to upgrade my Palm. Right now I am using a very old black and white Handspring Visor Edge from over 5 years ago, pretty much only for scheduling because it can't do much else.

I know I don't NEED a palm until 3rd year, but I was wondering if it was helpful to anyone 1st and 2nd year, what programs they use most, how one gets textbooks onto them, and most importantly, is it bad to go in with a 2 year old Palm 3rd year, or should i hold out (or expect to get a new one) when my clinicals start?

Additionally, what model do you guys recommend? Although I would love a Treo, I don't think i want an all-in-one. Will a life-drive last me longer, and will i be able to put more on it? The TX seems like a more reasonable option, but won't an expansion card bump up the price to that of the life drive?

i need guidance - I always overthink new gadget purchases!

If you don't want a converged device (e.g., a Treo), you'd probably do fine with the Tungsten E2 or TX. The LifeDrive is really bulky, and the hard drive makes it operate noticeably slower. Expansion cards are dirt cheap, so if you get an E2, you'll save a couple of hundred dollars over the price of a LifeDrive.

I want Wifi, which means TX then - but a 2 gig expansion card is $149, putting it 50 dollars more than the Life Drive, which has 4 gigs built in.

How much added memory do i actually need? I don't want the life drive if its slow, but adding more memory to the TX seems like it bumps the price up significantly.

Any thoughts on keeping the same PDA for all 4 years?

The lifedrive to me seemed slow when accessing programs and it also seemed tempermental locking up several times a day. I just got the treo 700 today.

If you're using your PDA for medical reference texts, and not trying to make it into an iPod, 2GB is crazy big. I do fine with 256MB, plenty of room to spare.

Wi-Fi on a PDA is overrated, IMO. Browsing the internet is painful on any PDA, Palm or WinMob. I'd rather not pay extra for something I'll only use once in a blue moon. Your mileage may vary.

You'll probably get 2 years out of a PDA, on average. Four years would be pushing it.
