Each program has an applicant:acceptace ratio. The lower ones are likely the less desirable ones. Also, any one you have to pay for would fit the bill.

Thanks for your response. I have been reading about all the schools at the aapd website and ASDA's Guide to Predoctoral Programs but was confused about the ratio thing there. For example when they say the ratio of acceptance to applicants is 1:50 and that school accepts a total of 5 that year, that means that 150 applied to that program?? but then what about those that say ratio is 1:4 and they accept at total of 10, does that really mean only 40 people applied to that program? and if so, does that mean that all 40 people got an interview? please advice. thanks.

I haven't done this for a long time, so bare with me...

#accepted : #applied (not interviewed)

- 1:50 = 5:250 (usually don't charge tuition, and pay their residents well, hence, more competitive to get in)

- 1:4 = 10:40 (typically you pay high tuition for these programs, and you don't get stipend)

If money isn't an issue, then why don't you just apply to pretty much all of the programs out there? Especially the ones in spanish-population heavy areas. NYC has a lot of pedo residencies and many of them have high spanish-speaking populations. It is hard to predict who a program will invite to interview so apply to all and see where the interviews come from.

At some of the programs I interviewed at I found out that the ratio on the AAPD site IS the #accepted: # interviewed (not the # that applied as I had previously supposed).

I think these are just the numbers that schools give them, and are often not updated. So, the 1:4, the school probably interviewed 40 people for 10 spots (with who knows how many applications), but the 1:30, they probably had 120 applications for 4 spots, and interviewed a small fraction of that.
