Which programs were unfilled in the match/used SOAP in the last few years? Surprising results?

Wondering which programs went unmatched during the MAIN MATCH (before SOAP/Scramble).

I am looking at this page:
http://www.nrmp.org/match-data/main-residency-match-data/

However, I am wondering if this is before SOAP or after SOAP. Also wondering if it is accurate or if there is something I am missing because programs I know are popular among my classmates eg Psych at San Mateo, Anesthesia at UCSD, are listed as unmatched in the last few years. Any thoughts?

Also, is there anywhere to see which programs lost residents and/or are looking for spots mid-year?

Thanks!

I'm pretty sure that the lists are pre-SOAP and are accurate. There are a couple reasons for why spots go unfilled even in desirable programs. Sometimes it's just that the programs don't interview/rank enough people, which leads to random, "shocking" unfilled spots, such as an unfilled neurosurgery spot at Brigham and Women's this past year, which quickly got filled during SOAP. Each year there's going to be variability in terms of interest in different specialties and locations so there's always a chance that a program can go unfilled, very much like how an extremely competitive applicant can go unmatched if they don't interview/rank enough programs.

It's also important to look at what types of spots went unfilled. In your example for Anesthesia at UCSD, the spots that went unfilled were "R" spots, which means that they're PGY-2 spots that only people who have GME experience, such as a current PGY-1 in a prelim spot, can apply for. The "R" spots aren't open to US senior medical students

I contacted the NRMP today requesting a list for 2013 unfilled residency programs. They told me that the list is no longer available and the list that are online are of individual programs after they are filled. Does anyone know where one might get a list from 2013 of the unfilled programs before soap? I haven't been able to find any online.

Thank you!

Hi xylinus,

So based on what they told you, does that mean that those positions that are shown as unfilled are the ones we could actually contact after the SOAP?

Thanks!

NRMP data only shows programs based on their status after the match. It doesn't count SOAP as matching.
