Or to be more specific, which programs require residents to either gross or sign out on the weekend for surgical path months? Preview and on-call time doesn't count.

I guess I'll start:
WEEKEND (+)
Brigham
UCLA-on some rotations

WEEKEND (-)
Yale
Stanford
UC Davis
Beth Israel
Michigan

Feel free to correct me as I fear I may have jumbled a few program details together...

*= while on Moffitt Surgicals cutting typically 8-5 (depends on speed and whether you are hit hard with FS and rush bx's) on Saturdays and 8-12pm Sunday; as well as handling rush bx and frozens; usually 1 weekend per month.

**= 4 hr Saturday/Sunday "cut call"- basically put in smalls and put large specimens in fix; might have to come in and cut on busy services (GI, Pulm/ Head & Neck); only have to do 4 of these as first year.

^^= I was told that you gross one Sat per month on surgicals by a few different residents, but won't move it to "Weekend +" until someone verifies this.

Looking back in my notes about Univ of Washington, I didn't write down if there were weekend responsibilities. Anyone know off-hand? Otherwise I'll drop them an email.

I can't imagine that there are any well-regarded path residencies that don't require some weekend time. Maybe not weekend signouts (which we don't have), but I remembered basically every program having some weekend responsibilities (on some weekends). Of course, nothing compares to most clinical interns who have roughly one golden weekend every couple of months.

Ok, I just picked up the qualifier in your first post (preview and on-call time doesn't count). If we (UVA) are grossing on Fridays, we have to have our specimens into the processor by 6pm on Sunday. Therefore, we can do it all on Friday or spread it out over three days as long as we make the Sunday evening deadline. The Friday frozen/on-call resident remains on call until Monday morning and grosses in any specimens from the weekend. We have no weekend signouts.

We work 6 weekends a year as an intern- 5 as a second year- 4 as a third and fourth- We have to work if we get an autopsy, usually no adults-
when we cut we come in at 9ish and are done by 2ish-

Im the medical director at my hospital, own my biz and I still have to gross and sign out on Saturday, read clinical path stuff on Sun.

If you are looking for a M-F 8-5 gig then expect to make far less than the rest of us in life.

Whatchyou talking about Willis 8-5 M-F? My days go something like 0930-1630 and lunch is at least 90 minutes gabbing with the fellas. Don't forget to subtract time to read the WSJ and surf the web. I haven't seen the inside of a lab on Sat/Sun in years! 😉

Depends on what your goals are really. If all you need is a couple hundred K a year to be "fed" then you can work far far less than 8-5 M-F. If you want to expand, build and conquer and need 850K+ to be fed, then you will need to put in the hours.

OMG how much do you weigh??

ok, i'll reply on behalf on Stanford...
we do NOT sign out on weekends, similar to other places. Regarding grossing, if you are grossing on friday (1 in 3 chance, based on our SP gross/preview/signout rotation; so basically once a month, occasionally twice), you (AND the other grossing resident) have to come in sometime over the weekend and gross the new stuff for Saturday/carryovers from late Fri, and the deadline is sunday evening when the processor starts. Thing is, the accessioners come in Sat morning, so you have to come in and make a quick run for specimens and code 'em for the accessioners, but then technically you can bolt and finish up ANYtime before sunday's processor starts (obv. you gotta be smart about time management). I'd say most residents just stay and finish up Saturday, staying on AVERAGE to sometime in the mid afternoon [assuming you come in around 9am, and remember: you've got 2 people coming in to help gross, so it very easily can go by fast]. But i've had events to go to on Sat's and just came in and coded, bolted, and finished up later on in the weekend. Usually the pair is a R1/R2, so rarely do you need to call a PA's cellphone asking for help on how to gross (although they're so cool about answering calls). We think the system works and are very happy with it. I'm glad to answer ?'s.

I have 200 illegimate children in a trailer park behind my lab. They eat alot. I need a cash flow of 100K/month to keep up with the mad billz.

Then go back and take a DP Fellowship... $850K/Yr are only for the 4-days a week 10-4 with lunchbreak 12-2 slackers... The rest doubles up.
Weekends? Who has a skin biopsy performed on a weekend? (unless it's the Hamptons, of course). Grossing? What in the world is that nasty beast? Clin path? I thought machines did that? D:

For Beth Israel, occasionally attendings will ask you to sign out with them on the weekends ... no one has asked me yet, and I talk up my kids so hopefully they WON'T. Also, when on derm, which we do by the week once every few months, you are expected to come in over the weekend and get the paperworks and slides in order (and preview some, of course) for work on Monday.

Otherwise, weekend required work is restricted to our call weeks (roughly one in 4-5 weeks), when we can do a fair amount of grossing on Saturday and/or Sunday, depending on volume. Runs between 9-2 PM Saturday only to full work days both days -- quite variable, obviously.

UCLA - Cutting call as described. ~3-4 times per year in the first three years (None in 4th year). You have to come in and accession and gross smalls/biopsies. Usually come in once on Sat and again on Sun PM. Cutoff is 3PM on Sunday for accessioning cases. Usually is a few hours of work, can be more. You also sign out Sat rushes in the AM with attending.
If you are on a surg path service (UCLA is specialty signout), then you are responsible to gross any big that comes in over the weekend by Sun 3PM. Some services almost never get specimens, some (GI/Liver) almost always get stuff.

Montefiore/Einstein - ORs are closed on weekends, but if you are on call, you have to perform any autopsies that come in on the weekend. They are not postponed to Monday. Cutoff is Sunday 4PM, after that the autopsy is done on Monday. Its a relatively common occurance on weekends.

I go in every weekend to gross when I am on surg path - prefer that to staying late on friday and finishing up. Plus it is sort of poor form to let something sit all weekend when you could gross it in and have it come out a day earlier. Nothing is really "required" other than getting your work done - I think that can be a misconception about pathology, people think there are set "hours" that you have to work, when in actuality things are far more nebulous. I could work 2am-11am if I wanted and everything would basically still get done the same way. Or 7am-noon, then take a four hour break, and work from 4pm-10pm.

Most programs will also have weekend call involving autopsies, call, grossing things that come in, etc.

Hmm... I have been having some health problems and have been working sort of odd hours (basically when I feel good). ALL my work gets done so I thought it was fine, but I have heard that people are not happy with me about it. (To be fair, I have missed some conferences that occur during "regular" hours). My class is sort of competitive with each other though.

Well, but see that presupposes that all of your job involves getting the required things done - the job also includes other things like conferences, dealing with things that come up near the end of the day, etc, many of these things may not be officially "required," but still are important for training, etc.

Sorry about your health, I suspect people would understand. Everyone's health is more important, if others have to cover, fill in, etc, it's understandable.

Don't worry about competitive people. The more I go through life the more I realize that the only person you really need to compete with is yourself.

Yes that is good advice. I'm trying to learn how to shake it off and just worry about myself.
