Does anyone know of a particular medical school(s) (md or do) that favors non-traditional students? I've heard Northwestern, but I'm not sure how true that is. The reason I ask is because I have had a very untraditional route. Didn't graduate high school, have tons of withdraws on my academic record due to an anxiety disorder, and had mediocre grades for the first 30 hours (at a community college). However since then I have been consistently making A's at The University of Texas at Austin. Additionally, I will be applying when I'm 29. Thanks.

P.S. The reason I posted this here is because I wanted to hear from a medical student that has better insight.

That's everyones reason for posting in Allo, yet for some reason they all get moved back to pre-allo! A large number of medical students post there.

Among the top 10 schools, Penn has a rep for being nontrad friendly - there was an article in Time or Newsweek about this a year ago or so.

Another that comes to mind is the Univ of Vermont, but I am not really sure I believe in the nontrad friendly school thing myself (and I am a nontrad).

Ultimately, you must compete against all the trads, so do everything you can to make yourself competitive with them - get that GPA up, kill the MCAT, get great LORs, and do plenty of the ECs like clinical volunteering and shadowing.

I'm 27 now and will hopefully be 29 when I apply. Let me know what you find out about being nontrad-tolerant. I'll be sure to apply there, plus it would be nice be in a student population in that age bracket rather than a little younger.

All is a forum for current med students to discuss issues concerning them, not to give access to premeds to solicit med student advice.

All med schools are nontrad friendly these days if you have competitive stats. Do a search and you will find that this topic has been discussed many many times. Apply broadly to places you want to go, not out of some anecdotal lore that certain places value nontrads more.

I had good experiences with UIC, Miami, UF, MUSC, MCW, Columbia, and Harvard, although schools tend to look favorably on MD/PhD applicants (like me) who are a bit older. My class at Miami has several older students, and many who have families. That was one of the draws for me.
