Hi everyone I am non trad student and it is fair to say I did not take undergrad that seriously ten years ago. For the last three years I have been back in school part time while working full time. I have a 4.0 in my pre med post bach over 40 hours now. Are there any allopathic schools that look more at recent coursework than overall gpa?? Right now my overall gpa is a 3.47 and my post bach is a 4.0 in all science and math classes. Mcat is pending.

Thank you!

I spoke with an admissions counselor for Michigan State today. I am in a similar situation as you; very low degree GPA (1.96) but ~80 credit post-bacc at 4.0. They told me the primary metrics for my admission would be my Post-Bacc performance + MCAT. I'm going to contact some other schools, if I get positive responses, I will post in this thread.

Thank you I really appreciate that.

Was this the mud osteopathic or allopathic school??

Canadian, but they said I'd need over a 3.5 on my post bacc (provided it is extensive) and I'm currently at a 4.0 over about 80 credits.

When combined with a good (>33) MCAT score, here are some schools that value reinvention, based upon posts by successful SDNers:

SUNY Upstate
Tufts
Drexel
Rosy Franklin
Albany
NYMC
Tulane
Case

You should also consider all new MD programs, and any DO program.

I'd like to keep this thread in my post history. My cGPA is a 3.08, but my last 190 units have been at a 3.6c/s. Semesters of straight F's/W's in community college will do that to you

I definitely know how that is but hey better late then never. It seems like UIC puts more emphasis on current coursework as well.

It's funny, every one of those schools is on my list and I found them all thru a variety of different methods not just off a list. And I agree, I have one term of F's from failing to withdraw while I was duel enrolled in H/S 11 years ago. It's amazing how much it drags down your GPA

Exactly! My science gpa is a 3.35 if you take out the the bio classes I failed ten years ago as a lazy kid it shoots up to a 3.7 sigh. Have u had any success this cycle?? Do you have any schools to add to the list??

I'm proud of my F semesters in cultural anthropology and intro to humanities. As soon as I'm accepted to medical school, I'm going to go and enroll in another easy community college class and fail it just for fun. Really fail it... bad. Turn in essays on the wrong topics, heckle the professor, etc.

I'm applying next cycle, but my list currently is Loyola, Rosi Franklin (dads alma mater), Rush, Tulane, Tufts, Geisel, NYMC, Upstate, Albany, Hofstra, Wake Forest, OHSU and UW (I count as in state at both), and drexel.

UW adcom last time I spoke with them basically said what they look at grade wise is trending, but there is an automatic cutoff. That said, they specifically mentioned if your below it to contact them and they will override it and still review your application. Main reason is because they only count freshman, soph, jr. year in the cutoff formula, so additional classes won't change your cutoff GPA and same with postbac work. Just start contacting adcoms and asking questions, they are generally very receptive and will help you out. You end up finding out all kinds of things, such as OHSU offers a heritage program that if you have a parent living in the state you're considered in state, UW considers all the WAMI states instate, etc.

Great thread. Would very much appreciate it if it gets updated with any new info regarding the topic @ hand (I'll be sure to post anything as well if I gain new info).

I have ~2.5 years of 4.0 in mostly upper division sciences but my cumulative is a 3.4. This past cycle Tufts interviewed me, pre-interview rejections at Rush, Loyola, Rosalind Franklin, Drexel, and plenty of others.

Why not ask "Which schools perform holistic review?" instead of "Which schools put more emphasis on recent coursework?"?

OP already struck out once asking this question in the pre-allopathic forum http://forums.studentdoctor.net/thr...e-emphasis-on-most-recent-coursework.1064622/, and in my experience, medical schools will ALWAYS tell you that they look at grade trends; like julius winfield said, above, this is kind of a who's on second thing.

At this point, wouldn't "which schools DONT perform a holistic review" be a better question?

Wtf. I think I just got a little dizzy. That's a pretty limiting cutoff for non trads.

That is discouraging did you contact the schools about why u were rejected? ?

Not yet, super busy lately but I intend on doing this seeing as I'm only on waitlists right now and probably will be reapplying. I will update here if any of them give me responses, I don't know to what extent those schools respond to those kind of inquiries.

I would kill for your m cat lol. What study materials did you use??

I did mostly examkrackers for content and kaplan for additional questions/practice tests. Once I had gone through all of the material for EK and Kaplan I did some sections of TBR where I wanted more review.

Some will respond, and some won't. Just make sure you ask for feedback on your rejection, not advice or counseling. I'm surprised that you haven't had more love.

It is insane to me you did not get in somewhere with a 36. The avg mcat at rosy franklin is a 30. Are there any red flags in your app low bcpm or lack of volunteer hours??

Jeez. Your stats / trends are like mine were, though your MCAT was a little higher, and I got lots of love from those schools. I thought Goro's list was spot on.

I can't believe how competitive it is getting these days.

I remember one MD school that placed a lot more emphasis on your last 90 or 120 credits. Might have been the new school in Michigan[1]. I know that isn't very helpful but I know a lot more about DO schools.

  • Applicants must have a strong academic record as evidenced by the overall GPA, the GPA in the prerequisite courses, and the GPA in the most recent 60 semester hours. A minimum overall GPA of 3.0 is generally required. We review applications for an upward trend to most recently completed coursework.
  • A minimum MCAT score of 24 is required. Applicants are encouraged to carefully review information on the MCAT website for recommended undergraduate coursework to best prepare for the MCAT examination.

That's an interesting spread of schools he has on his MDApps list...

Top Tier schools:
Columbia University, Cornell University, Emory University, Johns Hopkins University,Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York University, Stanford University, University of California, San Francisco, University of Chicago, University of Pennsylvania, Northwestern University

Heavily applied to schools:
George Washington University, Georgetown University, Rosalind Franklin University, Tufts University, Boston University

California schools (are a gamble):
University of California, Davis, University of California, Irvine, University of Southern California, University of California, Los Angeles, University of California, San Diego

State schools (doesn't have state ties):
University of Illinois, University of Maryland, University of Washington

Lower and mid tier schools:
Drexel University, Jefferson Medical College, New York Medical College, Rush Medical College, Temple University, Loyola University Chicago

I'm not feeling his school list. It seems like he's applied to tons of top tier schools, a bunch of low tier schools, and not enough in-betweens.

Hey julius, are you going to reapply this coming year? Where'd you do your undergrad? I'm not criticizing you, so don't get emotional on me.

I have an IA from 5 years ago, non academic. Lots of volunteer and and research.

It's definitely crazy out there though, and the IA can certainly be a factor they used to weed me out.

I likely will be reapplying next year, like I said I am just on waitlists at this point.

I definitely agree there are lots of top heavy schools on there, but then again my application is research heavy and 2 of my 3 interviews were at top 20 schools. CA is my IS, and unfortunately they are definitely tough. For the other state schools, I have family in the areas and took a shot. While I applied to a lot of school I also limited myself to major cities to have a decent job market for my wife.

Don't worry about me getting emotional, I'm definitely open to any schools you think are a good target for next year that would be a good fit.

PM sent... I don't like this place peeping my list

Some valuable info here; thanks for sharing!

I have a MPH recently earned (4.0), I'm preparing for MCAT now. I really am on the fence with a SMP bc I already have a Masters, but if I need to, I will due to my 2.8 undergrad. I was planning to apply MD, DO and 5 Years programs. So would they take that into consideration? After reading these boards, I know that MPH for some reason irks some the board members.
I should just contact each program?
