-Indiana resident
-Economics major with a minor in biology and chemistry.
-GPA after retaking several courses (courses I retook weren't prerequisite courses): 3.536 cGPA and a 3.41 sGPA.
  • Strong upward trend after my first 30 credit hours (3.6+ GPA per semester after Fall 2012)
  • 3.38 cGPA and 3.41 sGPA including the initial grades I received in the courses I retook.
-1 year of research working with glaucoma patients of African American descent (possible publication)
-102 volunteer hours at hospital
-101 volunteer hours at a local K-12 school tutoring students in mathematics and science courses.
-Board member of an Indian student organization
-30 hours shadowing a D.O.
-MCAT score of 28.
-Worked 20 hours/week throughout college at a pizzeria but worked 40 hours/week my first year of college (hence the several C's I received)
-I can definitely receive excellent LORs from my research supervisor, physics professor and a D.O.

Which schools should I apply to in this upcoming cycle considering my statistics and experience?

All of them (except LUCOM, do some research on the school and see if it's a good fit for you).

If you have ties to Oklahoma, Texas, Ohio, or Michigan then try OSUCOM, UNTHSC/TCOM, OUHCOM, and MSUCOM respectively. All great state DO schools, well respected, and have strong research opportunities

Props to working the food service btw (worked In-n-Out and Sbux)!

If you are SDA (seventh day Adventist) then you may want to consider Loma Linda (MD program).

Get a DO LOR. Your stand a shot for any schools besides CCOM/AZCOM, Touro Harlem, and the state schools (i'd say still apply, but some have high OOS tutition and large IS prefrence).

Are you SE Asian? If so, you'll probably get into a mid-tier DO school, but the top ones will be tough. Be on top of your interview game at every school, even the safeties.

What SE Asian have anything to do with OP's chance?

Chances outstanding. Apply to 10-15 schools of your liking.

I would not say outstanding. If he had say, 3.6sgpa + 30, yes, outstanding. But 28 is average or below average for a few schools. 3.4 is below average for a handful.

He will have a successful cycle, but "success" is subjective. I would reserve outstanding to those who would recieve an interview at ANY school they applied (even state schools as OOS applicants)

I do not agree that ORM is as detrimental to DO admissions compared to MD admissions.

Not detrimental. Not helpful at certain schools , yes. For one, Western U COMP comes to mind. With the large % of asian students, it will not help to also be an asian applicant.

DO schools don't seem to have as much ORM/URM issues, but they still exist.

I can understand WesternU simply because of the large asian population in CA. State-funded schools have a responsibility of having a class of equal representation compared to private DO schools which would be a driver towards having URM benefit and ORM detriment that is most apparent in states like CA.

Correct. This is why I have said "chances are not outstanding." They are good, but for an ORM of his stats, I do not forsee acceptances, or even interviews, where ever he chooses. The "chances are outstanding" should be reserved for those who really are above mcat and gpa averages for all DO schools , paired with DO interest/lor and exception EC's.

Concur.

Take the advice of the first reply and also apply to MD schools as well. This site tends to be pessimistic, and I wouldn't let anyone on the internet tell you that "you can't".
