It seems like most of the retail pharmacists I know work crazy, unpredictable schedules. Is hospital or long term care better in terms of scheduling?

Depends on the hospital of course, but at the hospital where I did all my rotations at the clinical pharmacists are 7-3 or 6-2 M-F and are exempt from holidays. Academia is another place where schedules are a traditional 8-5.

Consulting provides the best schedule.

No weekends...no holidays.. and you set your own travel schedule. And you work as much or as little as you need to get the job done.

Except, to consult, you need to provide a service to your client that others can't.

I work in a hospital as a staff pharmacist. I say it depends on the hospital. No 2 weeks of my schedule are alike. I do not have a regular schedule by any means. We self-schedule so we request what days we want to have off or what days we want to work. BTW, I work 70% days/30% seconds, 3 weekends per 12 week schedule and 2 holidays a year. Third shift works regularly 1 week on, 1 week off. Our clinical pharmacists have an 8-5 kind of job, no weekends/holidays except when on call. At the hospital across town, they rotate 2 weeks day shift, 1 week seconds and 1 week thirds.

LTC is more 8-5 with some call.....

Hospital depends......

Consulting is very flexible to a point.....most places want you to come during regular business hrs......but you set your schedule mostly.

And I speak from experience on all three....

retail sucks.....period.

That's not the type of consulting I was referring to.
