After reading the international practice rights thread, as well as several others on the subject of international licensure, I was unsure of the WHO's role in accreditation.

Does the WHO accredit allopathic schools, or is accreditation of medical schools not a role of the WHO at all?

The World Health Organization (WHO) does not accredit any schools. One of its function is to list schools given by various countries - it is up to the individual countries to determine how they accredit their schools.

From WHO's website:

"Readers are reminded that WHO has no authority to grant any form of recognition or accreditation to schools of medicine or other training institutions. Such a procedure remains the exclusive prerogative of the national government concerned. WHO limits itself to publishing information on medical schools that has been provided or confirmed by the governments of its Member States."

And if you are curious, US osteopathic medical schools are listed in WHO

From what I understand the WHO accredits some foreign schools to sit for the USMLE. All Osteopathic medical schools are accredited by the AOA and US regional accreditation associations. Therefore, all schools accredited by the WHO are allopathic.

That's right, my bad. The WHO lists them, the Educational Commision for Foreign Medical Graduates accredits them.

Thank you both for your help.
