can poorer people afford to go to the expensive private schools - are they easily covered by loans, or is it much harder for them?

i would think there are enough agencies out there willing to shower all dental students with $$ cause they know they'll get it all back with ease and great profit.

With good credit you will get the best interest rates. With bad credit you still can get loans. Higher rate, but possible to pay.

Look into all scholarships, grants anything will help.

Good luck!

Dental Mom is right about getting loans. It depends on your credit score--which only needs to be decent to be awarded money.

Being disadvantaged or "poor" might actually be to your advantage. You will be more likely to be awarded grants or scholarships. At Columbia, for instance, after you fill out the financial aid application (FAFSA) they automatically calculate how much money they will give you as grant money due to need. I think I got about $1000 per semester. They award up to about $7k-$8k I think.

The school will work with you to ensure that money is not the reason you decline to go. Lenders are very willing to lend money to medical professions because they know that you will make lots of money when you are done.

cool! i didn't realize you could still get fafsa aide in dental school...

sigh... if only us international students with good credit but no cosigner could have it this good... sigh.

While the loan would not be as nice as a stafford loan, you still can get aid. Just ask your financial aid advisor and he/she will explain. Dont let money be a deterant to you realizing your dream of being a dentist!

I know what you mean, but it is not as easy as it may sound for international students. the schools often want to see min of 3 years of tuition and fees sitting in their banck account before they even look at their application.

Most forms of private aid come from US banks that require a credit-worthy US resident cosigner to back the loans if a foreigner is applying. I believe some countries have banks that are willing to assist with the cost of attending a US dental school, but I am sure they are far and few in between. None the less, contact your financial aid office to see what they recommend.

Yes, it is possible to get loans to cover everything and most dental students do so. What isn't covered by a Stafford loan can be easily covered by a private one, such those offered by CitiAssist (e.g. CitiBank).

I'll be needing all the loans I can get

Yes.
Stafford loans, Health Professional Loan, Dental Education Assist Loan (DEAL) cover tuition and living expenses (around $12-15K/yr)
Only go to expensive private school if it's your only choice.

Why? Shouldn't our decision on where we go be based more on how we feel about the school in general (ie what they have to offer us) than how much it costs? Not trying to argue, just trying to figure where you're coming from...
