hey, i've done research during summer..and continue for my thesis.
i did it, cuz i wanted to know if grad school was something i might want to do..but nope! 🙂. good to realize now than later!

i know how to run westerns! assisted in decapitations, know a lil bit about cell cultures, etc.

i picked my prof..well actually he picked me! i had to apply to so many places before i got a FEW interviews! and 2 offers. but i chose him over this other prof because the other one was into botany...which isn't really my field.

i think research is a great experience...something all science students should do!
gd luck with your search for a supervisor 👍

I lucked into my one research opp - long story. My 'research' mostly was scoring data, putting together slides, that sort of thing. One semester later, I was given the chance to do my own project, but I was an idiot and turned it down (back in undergrad where I messed everything up). Oh, and this was psych research. So my work was as 'exhaustive' as I wanted it to be. Looking back, it was a great experience - I hope (more like pray) to work with him again, in fact. Expect to start out slow, like I did, and then once you've proved you're at least competent, your duties will expand dramatically.

F_T is right; just cast a wide net. Look on department web sites for a summary of current research, and apply to all labs that sound interesting. If you're willing to work for free, SOMEONE will be willing to take you on. If other universities are nearby, don't hesitate to apply there as well.

summer between fresh/soph year:
Psychology research in community health. Interviewed hundreds of local businesses about health insurance coverage.
Genetics: sloshed through desert streams in southern utah chopping toes off of toads and performing DNA tests on samples.

Summer between Junior/senior year:
Organic chemistry research. recieved $3,000 grant from NIH (national health institute) to study some photodynamic compounds that could be used to treat cancers. Still working on it 6 months later...will it ever end. Will present research at symposium in dec sometime.

I've done my reseach at small schools where you can just go up to a professor who is working in an area that interests you and ask about research. I attempted to get involved in research at a large research university (the university of utah) and had no luck. Too many forms to fill out, too much competition with post-docs or other rediculously dedicated researchers. Small schools have an advantage in this way.

well...im doing a research now ..this is my sophmore year...i emailed couple doctors in the college of dentistry and "i interviewed them" I was looking for the most appreciated least work research. I am working with the head of oral cancer.. I am doing a research on HPV virus in oral tissues. He promised me a publication by the end of this year. this is definately what u want to look for a publication..this is a big plus on your application. On the other hand dont over load ur self with classes when u do research. It is not going too well wiht my orgo and bio and other classes. But should get me somewhere overall. good luck
