Who here is setting their sites on harvard?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just curious... Its my top pick, i love the emphasis on research and I really want to teach at some point in my career...

If Harvard is where you want to get into, then you had better proof read your statement unlike you did here because the competition is high to get in there.

That is pretty bad but its an internet forum buddy.... Of course I proof read my PS and app..
On a side note I am pretty sure they look more for aptitude in science than english grammar. 😀
I really do want to pursue the research side of dentistry and I was hoping to find someone like-minded. Clearly all I get is the grammar police.

OP, you have to admit that it's pretty ironic to start a thread about aiming for Harvard, when it's written like a middle-schooler typing on AOL Instant Messenger. Pretty sure Harvard will want even want their dentists to have mastered capitalization.

Its also ironic that the guy saying how ironic my bad grammar is has himself, poor grammar. Like I said, it is an internet forum.

I'm interested in research as well and I really like HSDM's curriculum, but I've still got a few years before I apply. The integration with HST is intriguing as well. Since you're interested in research, have you looked into that option?

Hey, I was merely pointing out a fact that was sincere if your heart is set on Harvard. If I noticed it, they would too.

If research is really what you are interested in, then why is Harvard your top choice. Yes, they do a lot of research there, but there are other schools that offer just as good research experience. I can see about picking Harvard if they are doing research in a particular area that interests you. But, if just doing research in any area of dentistry is your goal, you can get that at most dental school and at schools much cheaper to attend than Harvard.

True, sort of... There is a bit more to the story. I had a number of relatives go there for various programs and they speak highly of the environment. Also one of the professors I did research for in oral pathology recommended it. Since I blew my chance to go to undergrad there I figured I would go for it this time. Sorry if I replied harshly. I write very casually when on the net and it just gets under my skin when people correct my grammar like I don't know any better. For me cost is not an issue, I am lucky in that regard. Whatever school I end up at research will definitely be my main focus.

I have a bit yes, looks interesting.

Sounds like this is your place then. Your stats look legit too. This silence on the application is a killer, huh?

Not really. The guy is raving about how much he wants to go to Harvard but can't even use the correct word in the topic title. I'd understand if it was a typo or something, but it's not even the right word.....

Don't put all your eggs in 1 basket. Plenty of other schools also have fantastic research facilities and emphasize on research in their dental curriculum. Apply to those as well.

Just in case le Harvard breaks your heart.

aww, give him a break yall

If research is your thang..add UCSF and UNC. Both schools have huge boners for research. I'm sure there are others as well.

If you are dead set on teaching and want to go up to the higher ranks (e.g. Dean) than Harvard would look pretty good I suppose. Good luck. 🙂

Out of the ~1000 people that apply there, 45 ascend to the ivory tower to continue their dental education.

So, I'd put your chances at about 4.5%.

columbia's research erection is pretty 'sizeable' too. lots of NIH and other sources.

Pittsburgh also finds research very bonerational.

You have got to be kidding me, right? People are seriously trying to say this kid should re-evaluate his application to Harvard because his grammar may have been slightly flawed on an INTERNET FORUM. This site can be a great resource, but some of you people seriously need to get out more and spend less time on here. Don't mean to be rude, but seriously have a beer.

Its just the type of thing that is similar to gunning for OMS... you're not suppose to tell anyone if you actually are. 😉

Which is ridiculous... I remember day 1 of dental school, a professor asked for a raise of hands of people that were interested in specializing. NO HANDS. In a class of 100 students, not one raised their hand! Lol, gimme a break!

If he wants to go to Harvard, than more power to him. There's nothing wrong with wanting that or flat out saying it. Part of the reason people don't want to state their ambitions is fear that others will try to bring them down. (As can be seen in a small way on this very thread)

it doesnt seem like you raised your hand in that anecdote either.

wat school is this ? 🙂 is it full of liars or are ppl just laid back?

I'd definitely be down to attend HSDM. Although... my GPA is a little bit lacking.🙁

Cool, I really hope you get in! I'm really interested in HSDM too, but I'm not sure if the feelings will be mutual. There's a large research team out there headed by a guy named Dr. Richard Maas. They have found that Apc Tissue knock-downs (RNAi) in adult mice are producing whole supernumerary teeth in multiple regions of the jaw (both maxillary and mandibular; non-ectopic!) Problem is, APC knock-down/knock-out/loss-of-function = colon cancer (messing with wnt pathway). Anyway, I would love to go there, if only to pop my head into that lab to see mice with two rows of teeth! If it doesn't happen, oh well. I may save a few hundred thousand dollars for not attending. The prospect of going, however, is very intriguing, I would argue, for any dental hopeful. That being said, LLU remains my top choice. All the best!

is my top choice as well. dont really care for private practice and am more into academia and doing research. dont really care for clinical if i am not planning on operating in private practice. that said i need to ace my DATs first! lol good luck to all who apply

if you just want to do research and academia why don't you just do your PhD? you don't need a DMD for that.

OP: Look into USC - I hear they have lots of funding and do a lot of good research...

not sure if you're being sarcastic or not, but you just happen to be right. lots of people are not fans of the dental curriculum however

I imagine Harvard would be a top choice for anyone based on the quality of education and the name alone. I mean, think about it, you can impress the ladies and make your parents the proudest people in the neighborhood.
