I am soooo upset. i just got rejected by nyu. why? i dont know. i know they interview like a 1000 people, and only accept around 200, but i thought i was IN! this is the "safety school" everyone talks about? i wrote them. no response.

i dont know what happened. i thought i did more than fine. very personal, very conversational interview. smooth flowing. i feel like i was TOO much myself. is that possible?

i have other interviews, and DO NOT want to mess it up. any advice?

anyone else been interviewed and have been rejected? 🙁 🙁 🙁

Sorry to hear that. When was the interview and how is ur stat?

uh now, now i'm really worried. I interviewed in early november, and was told today that my decision was mailed out on dec 13th. that can't be good

was it a rejection letter or a waitlist letter??

i got rejected also after the interview..i dont think it has much to do with the actual interview. i think the way it works is a bunch of ppl vote on u..and decide your fate. so the guy u interviewed with could love u..but if some other adcoms see you have a low BCP GPA..or got a low mark on the DAT..then you could be toast anyways..despite a good interview. thats probably what happened in my case

wow so many rejections after interviews. Kinda scary!!! :scared:

I know at Columbia they told us explicitly how they will accept/reject people. Essentially, your interviewer presents their findings, then the committee vote yes, no, waitlist and that determines your fate. Could be the same at other places.. not sure.

Getting rejected is a tough pill to swallow. NYU and the term "safety school" doesn't and shouldn't exist in the same sentence anymore; in fact, I think it has been a rumor all along. The "high" attrition rate has always been a rumor and may be due to the fact that since there is a large student body, there is a seemingly "large number" of people who drop out- but the attrition rate is at the national average.

The stigma that NYU has in being labeled a "safety school" lies in it's tuition. NYC is obviously a very expensive place to live and many students would opt for a cheaper d-school. Those students that waive their acceptances are usually geniuses with high GPA/DAT scores due to obvious acceptances at other institutions. Thus, in order to fill up the 230-odd seats are students of slightly lower GPA/DAT scores. Obviously, other factors such as your PS, extracurriculars, experience, and interviews are taken into consideration.

I've visited, interviewed, and toured NYU and was very impressed by the facilities and post-grad programs. The question lies, is it worth the 80 grand/year price tag? If NYU were to miraculously lower their tuition, it wouldn't be called a "safety school" by any means.

Hey Messenger, my condolences, I know JUST how you feel, believe you me. Anyway, it seems like NYU might be a "safety school" for the 21-22+++++ DAT people, but EVEN then, nothing is guaranteed. Everything seems so random this cycle but as tough as it might seem, we have to keep our head up & keep fighting. Miracles do & always happen & hopefully something will come out of this as a result of all our hard work & efforts.

I go to NYU and I know one of the persons who interviews students.
I talked to her the other day and she told me that after the interview, she will will check off "waitlist" "accept" or "reject."
Although she may check accept, a committee will look at everything and make a final decision. It is rare that you will get rejected by the interview (unless you seriously show no motivation or social skills). I asked if she ever rejected an applicant and she said only a few that really didn't seem into dentistry, very apathetic, those that are doing it only because their parents are dentists or applied because they couldn't get into med school.

to answer some of your questions, yes, it was a rejection letter.. no waitlist!

my stats are fair, 17-24 ish dat scores. 3.3 gpas. interviewed in nov. good recs, ecs.....🙁

like is said, cant figure why though. i thought my interviewer and I got along fairl well, but other factors do come into play i guess. and a final committee decision. i guess thats why they ask you, " If there was ONE thing that you would want me to tell the admissions committee, what would it be?"

this sucks. i really like them.🙁

I'm sorry to hear that man, I can't understand why they would turn you away. You seem to have competitive stats. If you are getting rejected, then people like me have no shot. I went there nov 6th for an interview, still haven't received any word. They told me it was mailed out dec 13th. It must be a rejection, I dont think they would have taken so long for an acceptance...I'm sure w/ your stats you'll get in somewhere. Keep the faith.

i think this is pretty accurate. i remember my interviewer at buffalo telling me that he doesn't make a decision, he only presents his assessment to the rest of the adcom. seems like the most logical way of doing things.

messenger, maybe you just didn't convince them enough that you would attend NYU if you got in. i don't know, just trying to think of a reason cause your stats are right on par with NYU. either way, sorry buddy. at least to you have more interviews.🙂
