Just wanted to know... I am staying an extra year at my university *super seniors unite* and wanted to see if any other SDNers were applying senior year of college. Or if you're applying Senior year but taking a year off.

I just graduated in May, and am now filling out my AMCAS. I'm hoping that it will only be one year off, because I really want to get in this cycle!

I got on the boat a little late, but I'm certainly not as late as some!

yep yep, moi aussi

Pretty much everyone at my school takes off to do an 8 month engineering internship. And I followed suit- good thing too, else I wouldn't be on a different track!

I am applying two years "late", if that is what you want to refer to it as. I ran post-collegiately for a year, and am just now applying. I took my MCAT my junior year of undergrad, so I better get in 🙂

Not applying till senior year to give me another year at the old UGPA.

Do I understand this right? If i apply the cycle of my senior year, I am in fact applying to start school a full year later?

Yup, staying an extra year. My uni lets you combine a bachelor's and a master's, so I'm getting a master's degree without graduating first.

You submit a primary summer/fall 07 to start fall 08. It is a year long process.

I'm taking a victory lap as well, it took me 2 years to figure out what I wanted to do and I've been playing catch up ever since. I'm going into my 4th year right now.

I think I might take an extra year to beef up my EC's....a bit lacking in the research dept though I'll have lots of clinical experience

I'm taking a 5th year to complete my undergrad/maybe completing a masters in biology. I didn't switch to pre-med until my junior year so it would be way too much work to make up all that coursework. I took the MCAT and got a 28R so I'll probably take that again. I'm planning on going the MD/PhD route so my 5th year will be used primarily to beef up my research experience......

I really believe that we are not in too much of a hurry to grow up anyways 🙂

I agree! I'm not anxious about spending ten more years in school. From what I hear, the real world sucks, and as long as I'm in school, I'm kind of suspending my childhood.

I'm going to be applying as a senior the next cycle. I know I want some kind of job for my year off, but I don't yet know what I'd like it to be. My options possibly include:

healthcare consulting
a research job
volunteering in a clinic in Tanzania

We'll see how it goes.

Don't worry about it. That extra time is just more time to mature and confirm your passions for medicine. I am just applying to medical school now, so if I get in, it will be in '08, eight years after I graduated high school.

I am doing the same.

If I get in this cycle I will also be out of high school for 8 years. Yikes!

Honestly, I wouldn't change it--I actually got to enjoy my 20s without slogging through med school. And right now, I'm psyched to go back to school, so I feel like the timing is right. I was so done with school by the time I graduated that I don't think I would've been able to give it my all.
