I am also from Cali. I actually went through the process last year and chose to go to a private school out here (Biola University) for my Psy.D (they offer PhD, as well). GRE's/applications/essays/interviews were rough last year, but the process does have an end, and there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I applied to 5 schools in 3 different states and interviewed with all of them.
It's interesting now, having started school, because I thought life was busy trying to finish undergrad and going through the application process, only to find out that it just gets worse! 🙂 I have been told by several further along the path in my program, that the first semester is rough, but time management continues to be a key in navigating one's way through this process.
Next semester, we begin "pre-practicum" (empathy building with a client) and "measurement and assessment I" (adult and child intelligence assessment w/ 2 clients), on top of the other "regular" classes we'll be taking; I can see how bit by bit, they will continue to add more and more onto our courseload/caseloads as we are ready (and some not so ready) to deal with each progressive step through the program. I can see how time management will help stress levels and the potential to contaminate our interactions with our first clients via our own "stuff." I feel for the PhD students in my program who have also taken on the commitments of research and publishing.
Anyway, all that to say, I too, am a Cali psych student, and I wish you peace and clarity in your application process.
🙂
