from their parents?

do you feel kinda bad for your parents? i mean even if your folks are balling out of control, it is a large sum of money.
be honest, i know i'm not the only one who is spoiled, it's nothing to be ashamed of.
i think my pops expects me to pay him back later anyway at a ridiculous premium 🙁
i guess there's no free lunch after all. 🙁

I'm hopefully getting a full ride from the military so I can serve my country and be a dentist at the same time 🙂

Your dad is paying for dental school? Wowzahs. My parents are paying for my undergrad, but I've been helping out by being an RA (free room + stipend) and getting the cheapest meal plan possible. I'm pretty much on my own for dental school application fees and tuition.

You are very lucky. Buy them a reeeeally nice car when you're a dentist. 😀

How much do your parents have to be making to feel that paying for your tuition is chump change? 100k? 200k?

to tell you the truth, paying that sum of money up front is not smart. Your parents should really let you get a government loan at a low interest rate and maybe help you along the way with meal plans and other stuff but paying up front is a bad idea. Who knows what will happen and maybe your parents will need that money...if you take a governement loan out u have to pay 10 years or so after your out of school...you will be making 100k or so, so thats not going to be that hard if you are smart about it. Be smart with your finances, use the governments money not yours!!! the interest rate is not that high...

As though children will not be inheriting everything? All parents leave wills when that very unfortunate times comes, similar to how we will leave wills when our times comes and the cycle continue.
I don't care if my parents pay for my education (and they are not), but I know I will be paying for my children's education as long as they are doing their best.
Upgrade your meal plan, what is an extra 200$ debt? an extra 2 hours on the job playing with teeth? yes I said playing because it is fun.
Now, if your parents can't pay then that is something else...

Low interest rate? Where are you getting your student loans from?

Darn it all! I'm going to finish my D-2 year (this year) 88K in debt just from dental school. But seriously this is something you think about AFTER you have an acceptance in your hand 😉 Good luck this cycle.

 lol, yea interest rates are NOT that hot right now. -> I have experience with loans, b/c my dad could not help me much with undergrad and wont help me at all with dental school (since I told him I wouldn't need it).

Either way, to the op, whats really the point of this thread? just to see who else is rich?

haha yea your right, when i looked into the interest rates government loans it was like 2 years ago when the economy wasnt so much $hit...but yea probably now adays its a bit harder to get those kind of loans...anyways good luck to everyone

Yeah, like Lexus RX 330 or 400h😀

My parents have payed for almost everything for me up to this point. I've always worked since I was younger, but they still pay for my insurance, sneak some cash into my wallet every once in a while, and let me drive their cars around (still don't have one that I can call my own yet). Scholarships covered almost all of my undergrad, but my parents took care of the rest... and then some.

I'm lucky to have parents that make a pretty nice amount of money, but I don't think I'll be able to grow up any time soon if I let them pay my way through dental school.

If I am accepted here in Houston (where I live), I may still live at home just to save some money... and I love me some of my mom's cookin and dad's mad grill skills. Can't say no to good food...

I'm getting a ride at taxpayer's expense.

If your parents aren't paying and you want a free ride, marry some rich guy/gal.

I'm hopefully going to get a ride through the Air Force, whether one would call this ride free is another point entirely.

I'll owe them 4 years after dental school, but I can't complain about all the added benefits of being an AF officer.

Airforce or Navy for me. Whichever feels like choosing me. Although Air Force is my first choice.

ru kidding it's not smart? do you know how much more you'd be paying with interest and over 10 years AFTER school?? you must not like money...
i was thinking about stepping up like a man and saying no to this offer 😎 but is saving a bit of my pride worth having a big ass elephant on my back😕 like some of you, my parents paid for my undergrad so i feel like it's not that big of a big deal.

and i mean it's 250k it's not like a mil...the stock market is horrible but there will be no liquidation of our assets.

Geez man, 250K is a very high amount of money. Some of us need, and are going to have to take out loans to pay for all of school. However, there is nothing I'd rather be doing than Dentistry, so the loans are ok by me.

i am fortunate enough to inherit a practice👍

My parents don't have $hittt! I'm taking out loans all the way and those who have parents who pay for their school ( I know a couple) more power to ya. But then again I don't have to beg my parents for money all the time, I only do it sometimes 😀.
It's not a bad deal if your parents can finance your dental career, but it's understandable if they can't or don't want to. Dental school costs a lot of money and as a money making dentist you should probably start building up your credit by taking out some school loans! Start using your economic sense 🙄

love my parents regardless though!

I plan to work with my father one day. However, I was raised with the mindset, "you want to go to Dental School?...."get your butt to the library". "you want to pay for Dental School?...."get your butt to the bank". I love my parents, and am glad they raised me this way, b/c I appreciate everything I have, and will work hard for everything.

Plus, you are investing in your future.

sounds like your parents are trying to do this whole tough love but their son is just too adorable for them to not pay for the undergrad & provide a place to practice.

i wish my parents would hook it up with a practice...that would be huge.

if you want to get an Airforce scholarship i advise you apply early. I looked into an AF scholarship in December 07 for Fall 08 and they were already gone. So i would talk to a recruiter in October about getting the ball rolling. Navy isn't a bad option either, thats what I ended up going with.

I contacted my recruiter last summer.. except he doesn't seem to like keeping in contact. I'll throw him an email this week. My navy recruiter at least called me once this summer.

Re: the original question:

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

My parents paid for my undergrad and post-bac. That is more than enough, and I've always expected that dental school would be on me.

In a lot of cultures, the parents pay for their childrens' educations (yes, even graduate degrees). I belong to one of these cultures. So yes, my parents have paid a large sum of money for my undergrad and my upcoming graduate degree. It wouldn't matter how much money they had, they would do their best to pay for it all. I will do the same for my children.

Same here, almost all Asian families are like this.

Actually, I've been told that the AF scholarships are completely gone by October (the date of the first board meeting), so if you want/need a dental scholarship I would advise getting that ball rolling a little bit faster.

My application is almost entirely complete except for my physical and interview, which are scheduled for the 12th of August, and my recruiter said that my application will be "on time".

Just a heads up to all of your AF HPSP hopefuls.

Don't you need to have an acceptance letter to at least one school to apply for AF scholarship? I thought most schools send out letters on Dec 1..

That's a good question... the Air Force will conditionally give you a scholarship before you have an acceptance letter if you meet their "MATRIX" requirements (19AA, i think, it's either 19AA or 19s across the board, and a 3.5 GPA). They do this because historically individuals with a 3.5GPA and a 19AA have had success during the admissions process.

However, if you have been conditionally accepted to the HPSP and you do not receive an offer of admission then your scholarship will go to someone who has been accepted.

Hopes this answers your question.

Good luck to you. If you have any questions just send me a PM.

Get all the stuff in ASAP. Once you get an acceptance letter on Dec 1st. Make a copy of it and send it to your recruiter. That's how I did it. Those that do not meet the matrix will be ranked in order of priority when the board meets after the dec 1st. Obviously the highest rank will probably get whatever is left after the people that meet the matrix requirements and have an acceptance letter. Beyond this if any additional spots open up whether it be AF getting additional funding for more scholarships or people turning down the offer the next in order of priority will get offered the spots. That's how it works. I actually got the offer quite late, around late June so those who don't get the initial offer there is a glimmer of hope.

Thanks for the info Blankguy.

May I ask what your grades and scores are? I'm just curious as to what the Air Force wants.

Thanks for your help.

LOL, only 88k? you are lucky. I hear people talking about 300k.

Oh, and I forgot to say that the guy who posted this thread is the same guy who was nagging about dental schools admitting so many Asians.
Dude, try your best to get in a dental school first...and then start boasting about your parents' money. Like "250 k is nothing".

sir, i'm a great applicant. i tried my best to become a great candidate the last four years, i don't have to try my best anymore, all the hard work is about to be pay off. i know i'm not the only one who is contemplating accepting my parents' offer so i wanted to make a thread so people can share their opinions. why are you mad ?

i don't understand all the negativity...you must be very sensitive about your race and or racism. i was just curious to know why there were so many asians in dental schools compare to medical schools. i'm fully aware that asian students are the smartest. i believe their avg sat score is about 50~100 points higher and their avg mcat about a point higher compare to other races including white. i dunno about dat but i'd bet asians have the highest avg. men lie women lie but numbers don't lie. these numbers are facts and you can google them if you want so please don't cry to me like not all asian students are smarter, i know plenty asians that are dumb, and whoispittsnogle you're ignorant and generalizing and your sample is limited making your confidence interval insufficient. shut up. but they are more likely to suffer in interviews and extracurriculars and other intangibles. oh my god whoispittsnogle you are wrong i'm asian and my ecs are great and i have amazing people skills. good for you then. it's my generalization i happen to think it's more accurate than the contrary.

still no one can explain why asians prefer dental over medical though, i would really like to know some reasons behind this discrepancy.

SHHHHHHHHHHHHHH😎👎
YOu don't deserve to get an answer. Keep on generalizing for yourself. You won't get anywhere.

The good thing is that the vast majority of people who go to dental school don't want anything to do with the military or choose not to go that route. I would focus on getting an acceptance from a school. That probably is the harder part because the military in general will take in people who are interested. My scores were solid 19-20ish and my GPA was around 3.2-3.3ish but my BCP and science were significantly higher.

I don't know. Why don't you ask an asian family to adopt you? 😛

hahaha 100k is NOTHING in SF! mine make 200k combined, and l definately cannot pay for my dental school... house debt is ridiculous!! im lucky they paid for my undergrad though 👍
i think 90% of dental sudents graduate 200-300k in debt.. its ok we'll make it back!!! 😀

Lemoncurry, we would appreciate it if you could close this thread too.

yeah i don't think making it back would be that big of a problem once you start practice. but i just don't like the concept of having to pay interest. i don't know how much opening your practice and equipments would cost but i'd imagine that's gotta be pretty pennies too. some people would have to start with like half a mil in debt. 😱
