Hello, I was wondering who here is planning on going to (or applying to) the Autonomous University of Mexico of Vet Med. It is accredited and not too expensive (I've heard). It sounds perfect for someone who knows Spanish and doesn't want to take too many loans (like in the US).

I'm considering that one and St. George's.

I am not sure many people in here even consider it. Even if I was a fluent Spanish speaker I would think having to relearn basic biology terminology in Spanish would be a headache. I think the school is newly built too? I don't know, I would not consider it going to Mexico for school. If you are considering St. George for school, there are other options with a higher reputation than Mexico in the same price range.

My bf wanted me to consider it, but meh. All those stories about Mexico lately make me never want to go there again. We watched a movie together that took place in the city he's from. He said it's really not that bad in Mexico, but it is like in that movie. 😱 No, thanks. Especially with me being a white, blond girl. No, thanks. Not happening.

Pretty much my thoughts as well lol.

I would consider it if...
A. I spoke fluent Spanish. Not just college courses, but growing up speaking it all the time.
B. I had been rejected from all US, Canadian, European, Australian, and New Zealand vet schools. Twice.

I am worried enough about starting vet school and mine teaches in a language that I (hopefully) understand perfectly. I couldn't imagine upping the risk of failure by trying to learn it all in Spanish. And the transition back to the USA would be tough b/c your clients will now speak English. Although I guess you could work in a border town or just stay in Mexico.

I only know the nasty parts of Mexico by the border. I've heard there are nice areas once you get deeper into the country but I would still worry. Would love to hear from someone who lives in the area or visited for a while and can report back!

My dad went to medical school in Mexico. I feel like it's definitely harder learning in a different language, but a lot of anatomical/medical terms etc. are similar and it can be doable. ex) Sternocleidomastoid muscle in English becomes if I remember correctly (esternomastoideo)...someone correct me if I'm wrong...it's been quite a few years since we talked about this in high school Spanish class. The OP also seems confident in their Spanish (probably more so than my dad who grew up in an English speaking household and did not take any more Spanish classes than I did). Not saying that this doesn't bring on additional challenges-only that with hard work it can be done and may even be worth considering if the debt load is significantly less.

Not sure about how easy it is to get a residency in the U.S. (if that is what you are interested in) etc. with veterinary school. It wasn't a problem for my dad, but again (that was med school and a billion years ago 🙂 ).

Also, like others said...worth looking into safety.

I never considered it seriously, but looked at it anyways to make my bf happy.

Don't take any of this for sure, because I don't remember much of it, but.. If I remember right, the area right around the vet school isn't very safe. They may have dorms to live at, but living somewhere else could be pretty bad. So if you do want to go there, make sure you really know the safe areas to stay at.

I think the only real answer to this topic is: Mexicans.
