Okay, sometime ago, on another thread were discussing which of the medical TV shows were most realistic, a bunch of posters kept going on about how House, Grey's Anatomy, etc. all sucked, and that Scrubs was the most realistic medical show out there. I distinctly remember someone saying their attending felt Scrubs was the best depiction of medical life. I had never seen Scrubs, and goddamn it, I believed you guys! I watched 2 episodes last week. What the hell were you guys smokin'?

I mean, "Dr. Acula"!!? The blonde woman doctor afraid to mention ovulation/vagina? Zach Braff's character stealing a Buddha? Angry sex? Okay, it was funny, I grant you that, but for your sakes, I hope you guys were being sarcastic when you were touting how realistic Scrubs was. 😡 Scrubs makes Grey's Anatomy look like Gray's Anatomy.

When people talk about Scrubs being accurate they're referring to the earlier episodes. You need to go back to season 1. The inner dialogue is great & not far from the truth for many med students/interns.

it is a fairly accurate show. 'Dr. Acula' on scrubs was not the first time i heard that being mentioned. and even though drs. have learned a great deal about anatomy, many are still immature or weirdos when it comes to discussing private parts. that is why i laugh when people think drs. are 'professional'

This matches what I've heard. Sort of scary, I guess. 🙂

The accuracy that people refer to can be found in all seasons of Scrubs.

When people say Scrubs is "realistic" they aren't talking about events/medical cases. They are taking about the fact that it captures the attitudes/experiences/feelings that all doctors and med students can relate to.

When JD has ___ experience, even though it's incredibly far-fetched and pitched in such a way as to be humorous, medically-inclined viewers across the country all say "that's exactly how I felt!".

That's a bit ridiculous though since anytime you have human actors then you are obviously going to see human emotions and will relate to them. Scrubs portrays very basic human emotions in a medical setting with the use of personal narrative and satire. It would be all too easy for any show to be deemed accurate and realistic if that was the main criteria. So yes the thoughts and emotions on Scrubs may be realistic at some level but that does not give it enough grounds to contend with other medical dramas in the category of realism. So basically the guy's comment on the other thread was out of line and he should have been more specific.

I have heard several doctors say that the feelings and emotions are pretty close to accurate to what a med student/intern feels. Besides, the show is so damn funny.

Oh, nobody is contending that the show isn't funny. Both my 10-year-old little brother and I laughed so hard we couldn't get off from the floor with the "Dr. Acula" joke, especially when Zach Braff threw away the "period" after "Dr", and pushed the two parts together into...[dramatic music] DRACULA!!! Very clever. 😛 However, the internal dialogue didn't strike me as being more realistic than any other medical show, and some of those situations are really ridiculous. I really wouldn't watch Scrubs for any insight into the medical field.

I just love Scrubs! It is the best show ever.

I think the thing with me is that everyone I know who watches Grey's Anatomy (people like my mom and sister who also watch trash like Desperate Housewives and the like) are all interested in which doctor is screwing which intern and likewise.

Maybe it's because I'm a woman or something but when a show is all about sex, even if it's not super marketed that way, it makes me hate the show instantly and every time I see a commericial for GA, it is two people kissing on a gurney or something.

Scrubs is crazy funny but I think it is a little more connected to the viewer in that yeah, the emotions are basic but that's the thing - everyone has them and so they feel connected to the characters. God knows I've had total Elliott moments where I've just cried about something for 10 minutes and then wiped my face so I could get back out to whatever I had to do. Sure they are totally zany and the themes are out-there but that show is awesome.

uh...the Dr. Acula thing was a dream sequence...he was talking about a screenplay he was writing...it was supposed to be a joke.

the people who were talking about the realism were quoting the doctors interviewed on the dvd of the series saying the show depicts the life of interns/residents very realistically as far as their emotions and the way it feels to be in those situations. so on that topic, yes, it's the most realistic.

Realistic or not it's f*ing hilarious. You want realistic medical drama, watch TLC.

Q: You appear to have no volunteer or shadowing experiences whatsoever. In your personal essay, you wrote, and I quote, "I have never seen the inside of a hospital." What exactly makes you think you're prepared for medicine?

A: I've never missed an episode of Scrubs.

If it was easy to effectively/intelligently/deeply portray human emotions on TV, then there would be many more good TV shows out there.

Hahah..love your sense of humor! I absolutely love Scrubs. Its so unique in its creative way for its sarcasm, humor etc. I haven't been able to see it regularly this season mainly because of my 5 year old.

In Scrubs, there is awesome humor..but underneath all the humor, there is a true compassionate caring attitude too. M*A*S*H was like that too. Its beautiful the way they present everything.
