I really want some cornbread.

Anyway more things I think of when I think of Appalachia (my side of the mountain, that is 😛):

The Mountain Parkway - if you have to pee stop at the Junior Williamson (pronounced "June-yer Wim-son")

The best names for towns: Hellier, Fish Trap, Kingdom Come, Lookout, Turkeyfoot, Pippa Passes, Topmost, Democrat, Redfox, Fleming-Neon, Premium, Yeaddiss, the list goes on....
Preheat to 400 F. 8x8 greased cake pan.

1 c flour
1 c cornmeal
1/4 c sugar
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 egg, lightly beaten
1 c (8oz) sour cream
1/3 c milk
1/4 c butter, melted (1/2 stick)
honey

Get 2 big bowls.
Put items 1-6 in one and mix it all up with your hands.
Break an egg into another bowl and beat slightly.
Combine the egg, sour cream and milk, blending with a spoon until mostly mixed.
Melt 1/4 c butter in the microwave and mix in the bowl of liquids until it's mostly mixed.
Pour the liquid on top of the dry ingredients and mix until everything is moistened.
Bake 20-25 min until a toothpick comes out clean. If the edges look slightly browned, you best be checking it.
Pour honey on top and use a spoon to spread it all over the top.
Wait 5 min or until honey is absorbed, repeat.
Eat it.

small towns where everyone knows your name (and your life history) and no one locks their doors; my in-laws are building a home in Union, WV : population <300, including 3 cops who do not work weekends 😱
