Hi,

I read this topic on another thread, but I dont think it fits my circumstances.

Im planning to take Bio/Phy/Eng during the summer, so I can consisitently take 3 classes every semester, for 2 years, and finish my 90 credit pre-req.

Like I said, I read in another thread that if you take courses in the summer, than its bad.....is this true???? I dont understand why, Im just trying to finish my courses, and I dont wanna stop going to school, or else I will loose my drive...

Can someone please help me, as I have already paid my tuition, and I have until next week to get a refund....I dont want to be taking courses in the summer, if it will affect my chances of getting in.

Thanks

Yeh, I've heard from others too that adcoms don't look at summer courses as seriously. However, in the end it's your GPA (and DAT) that counts. If you want to take summer classes, then by all means, I believe you should do so.

ok....but I still need more responses 🙂 I just dont want to waste $1700 +

the problem is that 3 classes a semester isnt a full schedule. how can you demonstrate that you can handle the rigorous dental school class load if you only take 3 classes each semester? how well you do does matter, although schools may question your ability even with good grades because you took so few classes at a time.

right, because I have a very low gpa I need to get it up...if i do take 4 classes a semester I will not get an A+ in all of them I think, but with three I can... And I also need to work, so having 4 classes and workig is tad bit difficult.

Also, if I do go to d.school, I will have no distractions, books will be friends, SERIOUSLY, and I wont have to get all A's, though that is my goal.

Also, the classes which Im taking, except for english, all have labs...so its definetly not 3 classes, if you know what I mean..

if i were you id take at the very least 4 classes per semester. you need to minimize your distractions and focus on your goal. i had to work too so i know it can be done. also, are you planning on applying without a degree (you said 90 credits)?

Yeah, w/o a degree....I read at one of the schools website, I cant remember which, that students with or without degrees are looked at the same way.

I really dont wnat to do a Bachelors degree b/c Im never going to actually use any of this information, If I have to though, I get one in Chem.

But seriously, 4 classes, and working is toooooooo much. Im really bad at english, and physics is the hardest science.

i had to work so i know its difficult but it can be done. also, if your GPA is low getting a bachelors may help because thats 30 extra credits to raise your GPA. ultimately the decision is for you to make regarding credits per semester, but i do know schools look at course load. i hope everything works out. good luck.

Yeah, but does taking classes in the SUMMER, effect my chances ?

I would say, take the summer classes at the school you attend. That way they count into your gpa. Then take 3 courses per semester you were planning on taking. In addition take one more class. Not a "fluff" class. The adcoms see through that. But there are always courses that look good to admissions, but they may be easy for you to do. I would talk to people at your university and find out which courses are taught by "easy proffs." For example, it is recommended that you take some business courses, but not required. Those look good on your resume. I knew that one of the econ. classes at my school was a breeze so I took it. It looked good, but it did not distract me from my very challenging classes. There are courses like this everywhere. Good luck.

or if there is a class that you are really good at. And you know you will do well without a lot of effort. Like if you are a wiz at computers. Take a computer course. If you are a genious at English, take an upper level lit. class. Make it an academic class that looks good, but one that you won't have to kill yourself to make that A.

yeah I see your point....but I hate arts courses, their are BORING!!! Science seems to intrigue me, but I have to study for BIO, which I hate...oh well

Ok...tell me if this works ?

summer- anatomy/physiology, phy 1, eng 1 (WORK)
fall- orgo chem 1, chem 2, stats, psyc 2 (NO WORK)

spring- orgo chem 2, cell bio 1, philosophy 1 (WORK)

summer- anatomy/physiology 2, phy 2, eng 2 (WORK)

it will if you are only taking 3 classes per semester during the regular school year (fall and spring semesters). its not the fact you are taking summer classes that is negative, most ppl have to take a summer class(es) at some point. its the fact that you take so many summer classes that you dont take a full schedule in the fall and spring that will hurt you.

I know this isnt what you mean, however, are you saying that I will benifit by taking 4 classes/sem and getting a B/A instead of taking 3 classes and getting an A ?

I don't know if you've ever taken classes during the summer, but 3 classes is a lot for that semester. You have so much less time compared to fall or spring. And the weather is too good too, so you'll prob get more distracted.

I've taken two required physics courses in the summer at another school. One required bio class in the summer at my school. One upper level economics class in the summer in my school. One upper level sociology class in the winter at my school. I don't think it makes a difference. My school advisor told me to take harder classes in the summer, so I can get better grades.

In the end, AADSAS will be the one calculating your GPA so it doesn't matter when or where you take courses. At one dental school, they will use AADSAS to pick the students with higher GPAs and DAT scores to determine who gets an interview.

I hope you know that it is very hectic to take 3 courses in the summer and work. Summer classes go by really quickly. Everything is squeezed into a month. If you are not 100% focused you will fall behind.

The more important things to worry about is your DAT, Science GPA, and GPA. You should also worry about shadowing and extracurricalar activites.

In the end, the best thing to do is to contact some of the schools you are interested in and ask them for their take on your problem. Ask them about not completing a degress as well.

good luck!

alright, thanks for the support guys

Ill be talking to my counsellor/advisor on Monday, and will probably also call some of the schools which Im interested in attending.
