Based off of DoctaJay FA thread. This is the rapid review path club. =)

Finished it last monday. Hoping to go through it again starting this monday.

...and approximately how many percent did you retain after your first read?

A decent amount, but I read it along with the class/system we're in. At this point, no I likely don't remember stuff covered a while back, but when I go through that material again, a lot of that stuff does come back.

read it front to back twice in 4 days this past week.. then got a "star" in path for my NBME yesterday 🙂

Note: I'm a very fast reader...

I've been able to read the entire book at least once a week during my studying. Once you go through the first read, you'll be able to get through it quicker on subsequent reads.

i read it with all my classes, but on the 15th of march i also started going through, from the beginning, 30 pages at a time. 30pages would take me about 45 min (and i am not a fast reader). getting from front to back took about 20 days. did i retain a ton? some....but i have plenty of time to go through it again, 30 pages at a time. it was a good way to approach it when i was still in a "hard" class. i may bump it up now that we are taking something easier.

I think RR Path is a "quicker" read than the thickness may imply. The outline format really makes the book look way bigger than it is.

Sweat damn! You guys read crazy fast. I read along with classes and my first time through took about six hours a chapter.

Of course I do like to or am at least forced to stop every few lines to process. It's kind of frightening for anybody studying close because my head snaps up to stare blankly into the distance, to ponder the mysteries of Goljan.

Hope it goes faster the second time, whenever that will be.

This is a good point.

Not only does the outline format make it seem bigger than it is, all the pictures and the practice exams (at the end of the book) add to the thickness.

That's not to say it's a short read; just that it shouldn't seem THAT intimidating.

I'm in the "I went through FA, RR, BRS Phys, and just about every
other review book 1/2 way through" Club, I think its time to just
stick to first aid. During classes and before the dedicated prep, do
you guys recommend to do FA and a question bank, or FA and RR.

Would you all say that RR path is good enough for the NBME Path Shelf?

My plan is to read through RR once for the shelf in prep for boards and go through the Lange Path flash cards.

when i finsihed that book it was seriously like climbing a mountain. so much fun

Is anyone else annotating his lecture notes (the pdf's) into Rapid Review or am I the only one? It's taking a lot of time, but I feel it's necessary because there is much more in them that is not in his book.

does this defeat the purpose of rapid review? unless like when people annotate first aid, you plan on using as a sole study source right before the exam. just curious.

are you just reading and taking notes or just reading front to back, and did you just finished path part and did nbme(path) and you got star.

Just started RR today...I appreciate his no-nonsense, straight-to-the-point style. Like he said in his audio lectures, Big Robbins is impossible to read if you have even the slightest ADD (which I do). I hope to finish RR in 7-10 days, and want to get through it at least 3-4 times before Step 1.

When is your test captopril??

really! I spend 7 days only on 1 chapter. how do you do it?. just curious .

Shootin for late July or early Aug. Still haven't scheduled a test date.

Are you serious or messing around? 1 chapter shouldn't take you longer than 2-3 hours and that is without any pathology knowledge whatsoever. Are you memorizing every word while you read? Even then, I'd say you could do at least 2 chapters a day.

I'm definitely with you on this one. For review purposes, I'm starting at Chapter 1 and moving forward.

First I'm reading the chapter. Then, I'm listening to the audio lecture and annotating the book. I try to do the annotating within a day of reading the chapter.

I only JUST started this strategy, but so far so good. At least until I finish with general path, my plan is one chapter + audio per day. I'm finishing up my Inflammation audio now.

has anyone done one of the 50q blocks at the end of RR? are they supposed to be "you learned what GOLJAN stressed well" or "you learned Step 1 path well"?

Joined this club this week after a torn bicep left me writhing in a tent with nothing else to do. Kind of a mixed victory.

So the question I have now is over the 200 or 500 pages of totally not copyright infringing material. Are people going to use this in their review or just stick to the book?

Fellow believers, I have just climbed the mountain of Goljan's website, and return to you now bearing a message from the One:

"The new RR Pathology 3rd edition will be out in July or August 2009. It has been extensively revised with > 2 times more pictures and margin notes; general treatment for all diseases; and more high yield material has been added to the tables. It will not only be useful for Step 1 but also your clinical rotations and Step 2."

Let us all continue to rejoice in these great blessings bestowed upon us by the god of Path (although there's no way on God's green earth I'm buying another edition of this book after Step 1).

Gosh...that's great and all...but the more he makes it for both Step 1 and 2 the more daunting it will be to use it for Step 1. Already it's sometimes difficult to tease out what's for Step 1 and whats extra (eg the heme chapter) so I'm glad i'm taking the exam before the new edition pops out so I won't feel pressured to use that instead!

Do you guys think it's necessary to annotate Goljan from Robbins? Or is Goljan sufficient without the extra info in Robins?

Necessary? Surely not.

Ideal for learning? Perhaps. But it kinda defeats the purpose.

The whole idea about having something like Goljan's RR is to quickly get to the best parts of Path. If you're going to take the time to go through Robbins so that you can annotate Goljan...why not just stick with Robbins, period?
