I'm currently a 2nd yr @ an osteopathic school and I have a very simple question for ya all anesthesiology residents/physicians. When asked' why anesthesiology?" what was your response? When my classmates ask me why I'm interested in anesthesiology, my answers are because I find it challenging, the field does not require many years of residency, and I'm leaning towards subspecializing in pain management.

Also, does anyone know of a "DO friendly" anesthesiology program in the west coast? Cali? Thanks.

Its too early to determine if this or any field is a correct fit for you. Get through 3rd year and then see where you stand. That is the only time you can honestly appreciate the weight of those questions.

I can tell you from personal experience that ALL anesthesia programs are DO friendly if you have good board (USMLE) scores. Do youself a huge favor and kick a$s on step 1.

As far as choosing a specialty, its the hardest thing I have ever done in my life. Try to figure out what type of people you like being around first. Then see if you like hands on versus less hands on. Narrow it down from there. Dont forget, you can always change even after you have started a residency.

If you are totally confused come time to apply, then apply for a few of your favorite transitional programs in addition to your top specialty. Then at least you have some options. You'll be behind the ball if you dont apply or apply late.

as for now, smoke the boards and try to enjoy all your rotations for what they are.
