So I am a 3rd year medical student and a big time lurker on the anesthesiology forum. Anesthesiology is my top choice as of right now, but I haven't really had the chance to talk to Anesthesiologists at my home program so I'd like to ask you all.

What were the reasons that made you pursue anesthesiology and what do you love about your job/life?

Your usual answers can be found here

After you read some of those answers, you can ask more specific questions.

1. Cool physiology happening in front of you.
2. Your work day is done at the moment you’re out of the hospital.
3. No clinic (at least not in the traditional sense)
4. No “real” notes.
5. People usually “like to work with their hands”
6. Pays decent enough.

In no particular order.

I love that my job allows me to live my life.

The pay is good, the hours aren’t terrible, and the work itself is mildly interesting. But most importantly, I leave it all behind me when I walk out the hospital at the end of the day… except for the occasional PACU call regarding the dumpster fire I just dropped on them as I ran out the door.

As a medical student I ran into hospitalists, pediatricians, two surgeons, and an ER doc that had all switched into anesthesia later in life. Didn’t seem to meet anyone that switched out….made me feel good about my choice ;)

My wife is a primary care doc, I'm an anesthesiologist. Something I'm acutely aware of and greatly appreciate is how if I ever want to leave and do something else, I can drop it all essentially overnight. She, like many other specialties, have to hand off their patient panel on to someone else and have more loose ends to tie up at the end. I love that non committal aspect, both on the daily scale of things but also on the long term job scale.

You get to sit down most of the time.
You don't have to do rectal or pelvic exams.
You can do breast exams if you want, but you’ll probably end up in jail for doing them so I recommend to not do that.

While some of the responses here are glib, I can assure you, with reasonably certainty that if you are not the right fit to practice
as an anesthesiologist you wont be happy . I would seek out people who have left the field, or pain doctors who dont do anesthesia anymore and interrogate them as to why they have chosen to leave anesthesia behind and see if you can reconcile those with the reason you like anesthesia. I can tell you from personal experience that it can be incredibly rewarding but at the same time can be incredibly frustrating. Just make sure you understand both sides of the coin to make an informed decision

.
I understand having an opinion on a message board where people share opinions can get me silenced or banned.
