I've interviewed at a fair share of medical schools, and while most of them have decent exteriors, often the interiors leave a lot to be desired. Most have dingy, cramped poorly lit subterranean basements floors, and a lot of the anatomy labs don't even have windows or any natural light source. It's seriously gloomy, and I can't help but feel it's a contributing factor in a large number of medical students being extremely depressed. It seems like a serious hazard to their mental health. Why are most medical schools so gloomy looking inside? I just don't get it. You'd think medical schools would do everything they can to make sure students are happy and well-adjusted, and if the exterior's nice, why not make the interior match?

Cornell is a good exception. When I took a tour there it bright and shiny as if brand new. Columbia Presbyterian was kind of dark. SUNY downstate, dark. Mount Sinai, bright. NYU, bright. Depends on the building really.

The point of medical school is not to make people happy; it is to turn out doctors. The money is going into other things and infrastructure is expensive.
