Sorry guys and girls, I don't mean to take over the forum...I have always had this question. Why are we seeing more applicants for dental schools today than let's say even 3 or 4 yrs ago. I have been wanting to apply for the past seven years but I couldn't due to some personal issues and I can totally see the trend. Do you know why we see the trend that we see? Please share your thoughts?

because physicians aren't making money anymore. Plus they have to deal with all the insurance crap and getting sued. Very time consuming.

how do you support that idea? do you have any stats to show? the reason I am asking is that I know some doctors that are making half a mill a year. Are you talking about family practice? please elaborate

My fiance's father is a dentist in Philly, and he and his colleagues have been sued several times each. he hasn't lost a filed suit yet, but it's still a pain in the butt. if one is trying to escape frivolous suits, joining the rastafarian brigade would be a good option- seems to be the safest sect. Seems everyone is fair game for lawsuits these days, even God apparently, who was sued by Senator Chambers.

more than anything, is the economic opportunity in dentistry that is broadcasted well... everywhere. More dentists exiting than entering - shortage in supply = economic opportunity. That's the general trend in other markets, so I doubt dentistry is any different. I've met a good number of people who want to enter community work, but I've met even more people who are simply in it for the money. Dilutes the humanistic aspect of it all, but it's hard to stop that train when people see green.

People are predicting that in the future there will be universal health care. Dentists will be making as much as physicians...

more people are interested in the healthcare field...i guess...and the competition continues to increase.... according to my advisor, years ago, the applicants would peak and then slightly fall... i'm not sure why...but nowadays, i highly doubt that would happen...it just seems harder and harder to get in

Look at the economy. There is your answer.

I have been out of school for awhile and work as an engineer. I think IT field has taken one of the most severe hits as the economy started nose dive. I and my fellow engineers felt it and feeling it pretty bad right now.

There isn't enough jobs out there but there are plenty of smart people out there looking for jobs and careers.

Compared to many jobs out there, dentistry is one of the well paid, respected and regarded as stable careers. Thus more people are interested in it, so there goes our competition.

I think people are sick and tired of working for someone else...they want to be their own boss I guess...This is a good way plus you are respected in the community...another reason is that medical school is long and you have no LIFE...with dentistry, you actually have a LIFE👍
