Hey folks, I am now working on my personal statement and I am having a problem about starting my essay on a certain topic required by many schools. The topic is "why are you applying to my school???" Seriously, I am applying to your school because not only the prerequisite matches but also the requirements for me are not that difficult. But I guess I can't put any of those down. So for those of you who completed these kinds of PS, what kinds of stuff do you put on your essay and how did you start? Should I put down stuff like the research, curriculum, and the student life in the school, or should I focus more on the town itself. Any comments would be helpful. Thanks😕

i usually find their mission statement online and explain how im fascinated by it and it inspires me to want to go to thair school-that their values/approach to the pharm d program is what youve been looking for. Also, if the school is unique in anyway, mention how you are intrigued by that. For example, Touro has 2 years of class and 2 years of rotations. UOP is a 3 year program. Just explain to that school that that is EXACTLY what youre looking for.

yup. read their mission statement, their curriculum, and additional information that their website offers and base it off that and how it suits you

and yes...where the school is located and why you want to go to that city particularly is important as well. some people prefer suburban small towns (because they may be from there) as opposed to a school being smack dab in the center of a highly urbanized area (example: USC)

I think that is the worst question and hate how all the schools ask that.

Seriously, the answer is going to be the same for everyone: because I want to be a pharmacist and you are a pharmacy school. geeez lol. For most people the real answers are "location" and "i think i have a better shot getting in there", but you cant put that. Instead you have to spend forever looking up specific info about the school and BS-ing about how great you think it is.

I dont care whats so great about your school. I will go anywhere that accepts me! lol

yeh seriously....i had the most trouble writing these kinds of essays

i'd rather show myself off in an essay...at least that makes you unique

Why can't you put stuff like "location?" Is it inappropriate to put that?

I discussed location at some length, and pointed out that I had been living in the area of the school for a long time, I had family and friends here, etc. and this was one of the factors that made it a first-choice school for me.

I agree. Location can be an important factor in selecting a school. It's just can't be the ONLY factor.

Think of it like buying a laptop. They all do the same thing, but each model has it's own features (faster CPU, more RAM, bigger screen, etc). Some features are more desirable and weigh heavier than others. The decision comes down to which model gives more desirable features for the lowest cost.

It's similar for pharmacy schools, but an applicant is just hoping for an opportunity to "buy" an education at one school. Pick the features the school has that you want and talk about them and how they will help you achieve your goal.

UH Hilo - Because I like the outdoors and I REALLY like rain (it's about as rainy as Seattle there). Yup.

Luckily, my #1 choice doesn't require me to write an essay about why I chose them (but it is an interview question).

The real answer would be because of the location and the opportunity to get a PharmD for less than 8K a year. In-state schools FTW.
