Why are you closing down thread?

I don't get it. It was a funny discussion. That was one of the most entertaining discussions lately. You got a nurse who thinks K of 3.9 is dangerous. And, somehow I've delivered the terrible news to my superiors many times and they never killed me for a K of 3.9. But, they did kick me straight in the balls for a K of 3.8 That hurt and I learned a valuable lesson.

Oh and ICU doesn't really qualify for sick patient care. Those pt are usually just chilling, and we kind of eyeball them and then, say, "Screw it. Lets go eat"

I'm mean, this belongs in a movie, or something.

Not all discussion has to be civilized. Nobody was using bad language. So, it was heated. What we can't have a little fun? The forums doesnt have to be all business, all the time. When you like to make jokes and talk all kind of nonsense about things that have nothing to do with the subject, that's okay. A little holier than thou attitude there, don't you think?

Several users were insulting each other and calling each other names. This is a violation of the SDN Terms of Service agreement which everyone, including yourself signed when you registered.

An in thread warning was posted that the users needed to be civil or the thread would be closed; it was ignored. Therefore, in accordance with the TOS it was closed.

In contrary to your statement, the Gen Residency forum, along with all the other "professional" forums does have a standard of discussion which has to be met. It DOES have to be civilized. Heated discussions are ok. Humorous discussions are acceptable. Calling each other names, bashing other practitioners and other behaviors displayed in the thread you reference is not.

If you have issues with SDN policy, please feel free to contact us using the Contact Us link on the home page or via PM. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Well excuse me, "a professional forum"

I invite everyone to go to that threat and check it out. It was no worse than hundreds of other threads in SDN history whether people were at each other. I did not see any unprofessional behavior. It was more like the typical passive-aggressive, too-intellectual banter that goes on here instead of a straight up " F U" that doesn't even occur.

No wonder you were outcast from the anesthesiology forum. Because, you were too uptight. They keep it fun.

I get enough "professional" exposure at work. I come here for FUN. We discuss things that we can't discuss at work, we say things we can't say at work, and if comes to people calling each other out once in a while w/o straight out "FU" well, then, what's the harm. Get off your high horse. it's much funner down here on the ground. Let's be real people.

A staff decision was made that the "banter" had gone too far, and a warning was issued. Members ignored the warning and therefore the thread was closed in accordance with SDN TOS and policy. Moderation is an art and there are threads which have gone on for too long and haven't been closed. That doesn't mean that every thread in which the users insult each other needs to be kept open for your amusement.

And you're right - there have been worse threads here. But the reason for closing was not solely due to content but because of the ignoring of the warning administered by the Moderator. This is always grounds for closing of threads if users have been warned and fail to comply with the TOS.

We want you to have fun at SDN. That is what The Lounge is designed for, if you prefer to say "FU" to other users. However, most members come to SDN for valuable discussion and information. Infighting and insults are not allowed in the Gen Res and other Residency or professional forums. This was at the behest of the majority of members who do not wish to be attacked or made fun of in the threads.

I invite you to review the Terms of Service again if you are confused about SDN policy.

If you want to visit a "funner" forum, you're welcome to visit The Lounge or Sociopolitical, both of which are unmoderated. If that's not fun enough for you, there are plenty of "funner" places on the internet, such as, say, 4chan.

People may come here for fun, but they don't come to be insulted, have assumptions made about their personalities or intellects, or be called "uptight."

Finally, while it is an "anonymous" forum, it is still visible to the public, and some SDNers have gotten in trouble, with either their school administration or their residency program director, for what they have posted on this site. So I don't think it's a stretch to call them "professional" forums.

I really can't argue with anything you said. All I can say is that
I called it as I see it. These rules and regulations that you talk about is enforced sporadically. At times, you allow pages after pages of this stuff whereas here it took 1.5 page. Your warnings therefore are sporadic. Whatever. Its your site.

So is your last paragraph a threat?

Thank you for upholding reasonable standards. There are a few posters who seem to think that they can say anything. I think they don't realize how others see them, nor realize how brutal they are being. But I'm glad to see some reigning-in being done.

- SDN is run by a bunch of volunteers, each with different understandings of when they should draw the line.

- It's also run by a bunch of volunteers who have other commitments, and can't always read these long threads carefully. It happened to be a slow day for me yesterday; I read through the thread and felt that it was time to draw the line.

So is your last paragraph a threat?

Hardly. I'm not a PD, and don't have the time or energy to go digging through SDN to find who everyone is. But, while you see SDN as a place to have "fun" without "professionalism" constraints, keep in mind that many other users (PDs included) do not.

I always wondered when in life it was exactly that people make the transition from the fun/logical real-world medstudent/resident type people you grew up with to the administrative talking heads...when did it happen to you?

did you read the above post? jesus I dont think I could seriously ever write something like that.

You'll understand when you're older. (I say that only partly in jest. You really will.) Maybe you could save this exchange and look at it again in 20 years. It'll give you a grin.

I don't doubt it in the least...seems to happen to everyone. I was just trying to find out what exactly causes it/when it happens so I can be on the lookout.

I've been reprimanded by "The Man" previously for calling someone a "Jerkface" even though that person "totally deserved it". I then proceeded to call the anonymous person who reported me an even "bigger Jerkface" - and that's when I found out the person who reported me was... "The Man".

It's all good, I know in my heart that dude is still a Jerkface. 🙂

Plus, it's good to have you guys around these days because the forums are absolutely littered with trolls - not novices either. People with multiple accounts trying to pass off as different people - their manner of writing always gives them away. Some stuff is good for a laugh or debate.. but I wasn't too fond of the racist thread I heard about in the lounge. Too far, and really odd.

Anyway, good work, but be fair. 👍

[EDIT: My "jerkface" comment was meant in a joking way. I have no issues with the moderators on this forum. I commend them for their level of patience and for volunteering their time to keep SDN running.]

Nothing anonymous about it, at all - don't EVER think you have ANY right to anonymity on SDN, especially if "the Man" is involved. I got "outed" by "the Man" stating that I "am known to report posts" (to whom?) and publicly being named as having reported a post. Not anonymous.

There's nothing transparent about the whole thing, at all. Also, if there's one thing consistent on SDN (in my 7 1/2 years), it's veritable whining by the staff about "we're volunteers!" If you can't do it, quit. It's that easy. Don't grumble about it while doing it.

edit: and mark my words at 1835HST: one (or more) of the staff WILL respond to this post, and will 1. berate me 2. tell me I deserved it (??) and 3. defend the staff by saying how hard their job is.

I suspect the major part of it comes from finding yourself having to deal with the children on internet forums while simultaneously not really giving a **** about them or their whiney overblown concerns. I mean Jesus, people on these forums take things way way too seriously and think that moderators are out to get them. As though moderators sit around saying, "hey, poster X is a douchebag, let's go through our terms of service and see how we can irritate them slightly." How do you respond to that? If you try to explain something to them they will nitpick it or accuse you of being biased or inconsistent. If the moderstor responds too vaguely or if god forbid is as unprofessional as the complainer then they will make an even bigger issue out of it. So in effect the only way to respond is to be professional and "administrative-type." I used to be a moderator on another forum (not medical related) and the types of people are similar here. You can't win arguments on the internet, you can only escalate them.

Do you really think that med students and residents are more logical than attendings? That's a laugh. Med students are probably more full of **** than almost anyone in the country except for pre meds, sports agents, and politicians.
