So typical interview question:

why do u choose dentistry?

Why this school?

Why do u want to become a dentist?

my interview is coming up and i know these are most commonly asked questions. how did u guys answer it? i have an idea of what to say, but maybe ur guys responses can help expand mine. thank u ! =) im sure this thread will help many other people too.

These answers have to be your own. Nobody can tell you why you want to become a dentist or why you chose a particular school. Take some time and think about it and you'll do fine.

Exactly. You need to have personal answers to those questions - give it a lot of honest thought and you should be fine.

As far as "why this school" I would take a look at the schools website and get a feel for what they are all about. Pick some things that you like and add those to your answer.

Anyone ever worry about scripting your answer so well, that it sounds like a rehearsal and not at all genuine ?

Yeah, I think I did that on my first interview. I was really nervous, so I did what I always do when I'm nervous about something, and I prepared a lot for my interview. I prepared answers for questions that I thought I was going to be asked, and I think I came off really rehearsed (which I was). It was really unfortunate though, because I think I have a very genuine reason for wanting to be a dentist. So, I decided not to prepare at all for the rest of my interviews, and that has worked out really well. But, I haven't gotten a chance to see how my non-overly prepared answer to the why denstistry question is because I haven't been asked again. I've had 4 consecutive interviews without being asked that question. Weird, huh?

I haven't been asked why I want to be a dentist in any of my (4) interviews. It is weird.

why do u choose dentistry?
To get chicks...

Why this school?
I hear the chicks here are easy...

Why do u want to become a dentist?
To get chicks...

You're welcome

About the not wanting to sound like a script... It feels so hard not to after being asked the same question over and over again. It was so hard to summarize my reasons for dentistry, so when I found something that worked, I found myself in fact pretty much sounding like a record. Does anyone else feel this way?

Just be honest and relax. The night before my interviews I just watch a funny movie. 40 year old virgin works great. The more you try to recite things, the more likely you can mess up during the interview from trying to memorize answers. There is no right or wrong answer, so just be yourself. They want to get to know you, and that's all.

When asked "Why dentistry?" it is wise to respond "Money."

Just do this exactly and your set. seriously!

If you cannot answer why dentistry without posting on a forum all I have to say is maybe you should reevaluate your life plan, carrer goals etc.. not trying to be mean.

sorry but sometimes I can sound like a di**👎

Just being honest

because it rocks :hardy:

I agree with everyone else. Just be honest.

I personally feel that if a person cannot find a good answer(s) to this question, then either he/she does not like dentistry or has no idea what this field is all about. Don't rely on others but ask yourself why you choose this career. If you have hard time answering, you need to either consider another occupation or try to find out more by shadowing your dentist. DP

this requires soul searching. FOr me, a family member died of oral cancer because they couldnt afford dental care.

So what's your answer Mr, Bubbles?

You could always stick with the classic answers: I like to work with my hands, dentistry affords a level of creativity, I didn't do well on the MCAT, or medicine isn't too favorable to people who don't speak English good. I've used several of these answers before, even though I think they're trite and without meaning. But they get the job done.

WOW u guys are AWESOME! i come back a day later and i see all ur reponses..

u guys are right, i am not going to recite, go with it..i'm just brainstorming now =)

i'm mainly gonna talk about my experience growing up without adequate dental insurance ( my parents came to the US a year before i was born so we were financially unstable).. my oral hygience suffered because of it ..blah blha blah blha...u get the idea..is that too "sad" or should i change.. or am i on the right track?

Dude!!! you are still asking the same question. Stop fishing so hard and sit and figure it out. Didn't you write a personal statement? Usually this is a part of it. The only one who knows if you are on the right track is you.
