Hi

Last semester I took a biology class and the I teacher didn't teach nor explain anything well. He told our class to buy a packet and get the packet answers from this review place around our school. So we had to memorize answers instead of understanding the material. And on top of that most people receive an B or C in the class because he would only take some of the questions out of the packet and create new questions. He didn't even go over the material well for the new questions. What should I do, will that hurt my MCAT score?

How do you deal with horrible teachers? Do most of you not care what kind of teachers you have because you are great self-learners.

When I first started my freshmen year I couldn't believe how bad some of my profs were, and I couldn't believe how good some of my other profs were. It all depends on what they are there for. Unfortunately most science profs are there for the research and they teach because they have too. Most of these porfs culd care less about you and teaching. I say most because there are some who really do care, I was lucky enough to come across a few of these in my undergrad... a few. That said, the best prof I ever had was my english prof in first year. He was there for the students and that was very evident. When I think back, the reason I loved this prof so much was that he was the complete polar opposite of my science profs.

The thing to remember most is to not let how terrible you prof is, affect how you look at the course. Always be positive about the courses you take, you stand a much better chance at doing well if you actually like what you are doing. Sometimes hatred for a prof can cross over to hatred for a certain subject. Don't let this happen, because it will wreck havek on your GPA.

Through undergrad you will realize that know matter what courses you take and no matter what prof you have, most of the learning you will do will be "self learning". YOu have to do things for yourself in college. SO start early. Good Luck!!

Remember, at most large universities teachers are really researchers who teach for extra incentives.

Some professors are nice and really make an effort to teach their students and genuinely care how the students respond to their teaching methods and tests. Such as if a test is too hard, the teacher will generously adjust their curves or the next test.

But then SOME professors don't care about the students at all. These are the ones who essentially throw up mass amounts of data with little care whether the student understands at all, throws out tests with surprising questions, and grades on a strict curve or a strict bell shaped curve.

There are some teachers who also think that it's vitally important that students "understand" their class and prove this by FAILING a large percent of their class for bragging rights. I do not understand this, but it happens.

So yes, professors are a strange quantity. I remember there were a couple of different profs for ochem. The one I took, about everyone in the class got a C with averages in the high 30's. The other professor had class averages in the high 80's and his tests were just as easy as UCLA's ;-)
