Why do we need threads about why a particular group succeeds

Because someone lacks supportive parents, or wasn't raised as part of a culture that promotes success, they are doomed to automatically fail in life?

Making generalizations about the successes or failures of any group or race is reckless. There are countless exceptions to every rule. Not every person from a supportive family/culture/whatever succeeds. Not every person who's not from a supportive family/culture/whatever fails either.

Why do we need threads about why X-americans succeed?

One of the smartest and hardest working guys I knew in HS lived in a trailer park with dumb a$$ parents who did not encourage him and actually ridculed him a bit. His older brother was in jail by 17 and his little sister was pregnant/dropped out at 14.

Then again, last I heard, he dropped out of Syracuse Univeristy and was an alcolic. I'll put my $$ on the suportive parents and good role models.

There are always going to be exceptions. But not many in these cases.......

I thought you'd like that one. The dude didn't show up the 10yr reunion last summer. I've been meaning to find him and kick his a$$ if what I heard was true. This guy was truly special...... brilliant in a way I'll never be.

i've got one of those shirts too. i got it for donating blood at a local center. nifty shirt i might add, especially the nike swoosh made out of little blood droplets.

I started the "Why African American Students succeed " thread in response to the the thread about why black students are lagging behind" ( http://www.studentdoctor.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=71103&highlight=lagging) and as a guide to URM students in general. While suggestions on that list may be obvious to some students of color some or not , at least they were not obvious to me as an undergraduate student.
