Does anyone have any idea why this is?

Rice has the highest concentration of "Baylor level" folks. They can keep their in state acceptances high and maintain their "high admissions standards" in large, from one small, easily accessible student body.

Just a thought.

I would like to see the average MCAT score coming out of Rice, I expect it would be pretty high (32/33 or so would be my guess).....Baylor likey high.

The same thing could be said of your university except that y'all have 689000 pre-meds so it isn' really a good comparison.

Given your stats you could likely find yourself flying high with the Owls, hopefully, if that is your dream anyway.

Take care,

Baylor is within 5 minutes walk of Rice U. I spent the summer at a premedical camp that was jointly hosted by Baylor and Rice. They tend to do a lot together...

Weren't there rumors that Rice and BCM would establish a formal affiliation?

Word. Baylor likes to have high standards and Rice is the best undergrad institution in Texas. So you do the math

Yup, Rice is

1. The best UG institution......
2. .....in Texas

With Baylor typically filling their class 70/30 In-State/OOS, seems natural that there would be an affinity for Rice students by Baylor.

An interesting question would be whether OOS Rice students do as well in the admissions process to Baylor as in-state Rice students.

Don't sweat it too much, since I think other schools are well represented in the Baylor incoming class. I know that I am ready to do my part for my school (not Rice) 🙂

👍 This is a really good point, rambler. Exactly what I was thinking when I saw the thread title.

I heard something like 1/3 of Rice's liberal arts and natural science majors are pre-med. Obviously, Rice has a lot of students with high numbers, but then again, UT has a lot of students overall. So in my opinion, shouldn't the number of competitive applicants equal out at both universities? Rice has a BA/MD program, but only for up to 15 people a year.

i believe it's the proximity. rice students tend to be active over at baylor and the med center and get to know doctors that, i guess, have pull in admissions. i don't think it's necessarily an institution preference. it may also be that rice students tend to do better on the MCAT and such (last i heard rice's avg MCAT was 30, while all other applicants were 25-27).

UT students already get preferential treatment at the public schools, so why not let Rice get special treatment at the one private school? I wish my school had a special relationship with a med school.

Rice students are not only as bright as Harvard/Princeton students, but they're of course more Texan (which Baylor needs) and also possibly more economically diverse... as well as good financial aid, Rice has merit scholarships and MUCH lower tuition than other schools of its caliber ($26k vs >$40k for most Boston area schools...)

I think the Texas public schools have an advantage for UT schools, but with Rice being the best private school in Texas, I'm not surprised they have an advantage.

Either way, don't worry about it, you have good stats and you're from Texas. You have an interview there, so just worry about yourself.

Good luck during your cycle :luck: ,

I thought it was because after a good meal of rice, you didn't feel full 3 hours later.

Haha, that would have been funny had the thread been titled "Why does Baylor prefer Rice?".

Rice has crazy hookups everywhere, especially for premeds. And they are very close (geographically and professionally) to Baylor. I'm not belittling the caliber of the education Rice offers or the quality of its students, but there are plenty of students with comparable numbers at other Texas undergrad schools. The Rice student body would just have a higher concentration of these types. Anyway, hookups, they're an obvious advantage and it definitely shows in the Rice😳ther ratio of Baylor's classes. But whatever, if you're qualified, you'll get in. I always root for the underdog. 😀

Well why not? I don't mind 😛

Actually, I don't really think they favor us particularly, but a lot of us are in-state and have pretty good stats.. so like I said, why not?

Does anyone have any idea why this is?

I don't want to start a war, but if you look at Baylor's classes, the ratio is more heavily skewed than one should expect even given your points.

yeah!!!! for a while everyone on campus thought that Baylor was going to move towards becoming a school under Rice University

I totally got rejected from Rice when I applied for UG. No offense, but I think Rice has a habit of looking for really eccentric applicants. Most of the people that got in from my HS were very socially awkward. Not that I'm bitter or anything...no sireeee...

Must have something to do with that box on the app where you can put whatever you want. 😀

No I would say the same...I felt like a serious outcast b/c alot of the people were odd...very computer science-/harcore engineering-esque type people.

I found my nitche though...
