anyone else think it's odd that the NHLBI has their own announcement for the F30 whereas the other F30-awarding institutes get clumped together?

NHLBI: http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PA-09-232.html

Everyone else: http://grants1.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PA-09-207.html

Another thing, is it just me or is the F31 now open to ALL MD/PhD applicants, not just minorities?
F31: http://grants1.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PA-09-208.html
I find no mention of diversity or minority applicants in the second listing under the F31 fellowships.

There still exists an F31 for diversity: http://grants1.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PA-09-209.html

Yes, NHLBI is recent. Up till last year I think it was a separate grant and you could only apply in April. Now it's a real F30 but apparently slightly different from the others. It was a long time coming - there's a ton of good projects that can go into that category - anything hematopoietic/hemodynamic, not just heart and lungs.

Better call the NIH up about F31 and double check.

looks like the difference between NHLBI F30 and others' F30 is the NHLBI one only funds MD/PhD students.

i'll stay away form the F31. I don't want to be the only MD/PhD in that pool. Seems like an oversight on NIH's part to me.

Hey Guys if you go to this part of the F31 portion:

http://grants1.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PA-09-208.html#SectionIII

It's the same PA but it's html tagged to the eligibility section it says:

"Individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, individuals with disabilities, and individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds may also be eligible to apply for the Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Awards for Individual Predoctoral Fellowships (F31) to Promote Diversity in Health-Related Research (PA-09-209)."

While that is vague I wouldn't chance it. If you perform diversity research (health disparities between minorities) I wonder if you are eligible... But better try the regular F30's. My understanding is that you can request funding throughout medical school whereas if you got an F31 (Diversity or otherwise) you only get grad school covered...even if you are MD-PhD.

Anyone apply for the June-Jan Cycle for any NRSAs?

I know this is an old thread, but I agree that performing diversity-related research is not going to help you get a fellowship for URMs if you are not a URM.

That's a good point about the F30 vs F31 in terms of medical school funding. The F30's/31's were updated recently with new page limits btw.
